In which travel insurance region is my destination country?

Which Travel Insurance region should I select for my trip?

If you’re travelling to multiple countries, it may be confusing to figure out which travel insurance region you should select for your policy.

Some countries are not in the regions you would assume them to be! For example, when it comes to buying travel insurance, Hawaii may be in the Worldwide region and both Turkey and Russia in the Europe region.

We have created this guide to help you select the right geographical region for your holiday and put your mind at ease before you set off for your trip.

Every country has been designated a specific region for Travel Insurance purposes. It’s important to select the correct region when purchasing your policy, otherwise you may not be covered for travels to that region.

This could result in your claim being declined which means you would be responsible for all costs incurred. If you are seriously ill or injured, these could easily add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars for overseas emergency medical expenses.

5 Travel Insurance Region Tips

  1. The Worldwide region is the highest region which covers all travel destinations, and the Domestic region is the lowest region because it only covers you for travel within Australia.
  2. Be sure you know the correct region for the country or countries you’re planning to visit.
  3. Whichever geographical region you select, you’re also automatically covered for all the regions below it at no additional charge.
  4. You’re automatically covered for stopovers of two nights or less in higher regions.
  5. Contact us immediately if you have selected the wrong region or you change your travel plans to visit a higher level region.

The higher the region you select the more regions you’ll have cover for if you decide to stop off somewhere or change your plans.

Travel Insurance Region Frequently Asked Questions

If I select a higher geographical region but the country I’m travelling to is in a lower region, is my policy still valid?

Yes, higher regions automatically cover the lower regions. Eg If you buy a policy for the Europe region, you are also covered if you travel to the South Pacific Islands.

Which geographical region do I select if I’m visiting multiple cities or countries?

If you’re visiting multiple cities or countries you should select the highest region applicable for your trip.

Example

Sarah has booked a holiday. First she is flying to China (Asia region) for two weeks to visit friends, do some sight-seeing and lots of shopping. She will then fly to Bali (Pacific region) for one week of lying by the pool and cocktails.

Sarah should select the Asia region, which will cover her to travel to China and also Bali.

If I select the Europe region, will I still have cover if I’m also visiting Thailand which is in Asia?

Yes, when you select a travel insurance region, you will automatically receive cover for the lower regions.

Example

John is flying to England (Europe region) first for a friend’s wedding and to hang out with his mates for a few weeks. As he has just finished a contract for work, he is having a couple of month’s holiday but has no definite plan of where he’ll be going but thinks he might stop off in Thailand (Asia region), New Zealand (Pacific region) and maybe Brisbane (Domestic region) before coming back to Sydney to search for a new job.

His selection of the Europe region will provide him with cover for the other possible destinations in the Asia, Pacific and Domestic regions at no extra charge.

What if I have a stopover in a higher region?

You’re permitted a stopover in a higher region of up to two nights. However, if you’re stopping over for more than two nights in a higher region, you should select the higher region for your entire trip.

Please note that the two-night stop over allowance does not apply when you’re on a cruise.  So if you’re cruising, and spending only one night in Hawaii for example, you should still select the higher Worldwide region for your policy.

Example

Nick and Connie are flying to Greece (Europe region) for their honeymoon. They managed to get a deal with Etihad that includes a two-night stopover in Abu Dhabi (Worldwide region).

The stopover is in a higher region than Europe, but as it’s only for two nights or less, they only need to buy a policy for the Europe region.

What should I do if I have selected the wrong region?

If you have selected the wrong region for your trip, please call us and we can correct it for you. An additional premium may apply if you need to upgrade to a higher region.

What if my plans change and I’m now visiting a country in a higher region?

The good news is that we can upgrade your policy while you’re travelling.  Contact us immediately and let us know your new travel plans and we’ll upgrade your policy. An additional fee may apply for the upgrade.
