What does travel insurance for adventure activities cover?

Fast Cover’s Adventure Pack is an optional benefit that extends cover under a range of existing benefits when a claim arises from your participation in list of adventure activities outlined below. The Adventure Pack may better help you deal with unexpected events related to those activities.

This is only a summary of some benefits available. Each policy has specific terms, conditions, exclusions, and limits. Not all benefits apply to all policies, so always review the PDS before deciding.

Medical emergencies can happen while participating in adventure activities on your overseas trip. Fast Cover’s Aussie based team of experts are available to provide 24/7 support for overseas medical emergencies, depending on your situation and location. ^

Our Emergency Assistance team may be able to help arrange experienced medical support services in the event of unexpected circumstances that arise from your participation in a covered adventure activity overseas. ^

An unexpected trip to a hospital overseas is the last thing you might want on your bucket list. If you get injured while participating in an adventure activity during your overseas trip, Fast Cover may be able to help with overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses in some circumstances which are covered under your policy. ^

Fast Cover's international travel insurance policies cover reasonable overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses arising from unexpected injury sustained while participating in a covered adventure activity during your trip. Cover applies to expenses you have not been reimbursed for. ^

Please note: There is no cover for medical or other related expenses incurred in Australia.

If you become seriously injured or sick while participating in a covered adventure activity overseas, access to emergency medical care could make a huge difference. Fast Cover may be able to help with the cost of getting you to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or even flying you back to Australia, in circumstances covered under your policy. ^

In case you are seriously injured or sick as a result of participating in an adventure activity on your trip overseas, Fast Cover’s international travel insurance policies are available to provide cover for your reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or be brought back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision. The medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation must first be approved by Fast Cover. ^

Cancelled adventures aren’t just disappointing, they can be expensive too. If you need to unexpectedly cancel your adventure holiday, our Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit may help protect the non-refundable trip bookings you’ve already paid for including flights, accommodation and tours in circumstances explained in your policy. ^

At Fast Cover, you can buy travel insurance for your holiday up to 12 months prior to your departure date, including before you've booked adventure tours and any accommodation. Please note cancellation cover is only available with our Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus  and Frequent Traveller Saver policies. ^

Natural disasters and severe weather could throw your adventure trip off track, disrupting your planned adventure activity if your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted due to severe weather or a natural disaster that begun after we issued the Certificate of Insurance.

If a disruption occurs during your trip which is outside of your control and arises from the reasons covered by your policy and explained in the PDS, we may be able to help. ^

While it’s not something we would want to think about, serious accidents can happen when participating in adventure activities. Fast Cover’s Accidental Death benefit can provide a lump sum payment to your estate if you are injured during your trip while participating in an adventure activity and you pass away because of that injury within 12 months of the injury date

The Accidental Death benefit is available under our Comprehensive, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus and Frequent Traveller Saver policies.

Do I need travel insurance for adventure activities?

Whether you’re planning to go quad biking in Bali, zip lining in New Zealand or water skiing in Croatia, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control can arise while participating in adventure activities and may leave you with out of pocket expenses. Travel insurance with cover for adventure activities can help reimburse you the cost associated with the unforeseen events that could impact your trip if the unexpected happens. Please consider your personal and financial circumstances, along with the T&Cs of our PDS, before deciding whether Fast Cover’s Adventure Pack and eligible policy is right for you.

Here are some situations which you might consider when deciding if you need travel insurance with cover for adventure activities for your next trip and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations:

Consider whether your travel insurance can provide cover if you become sick or injured while participating in adventure activities overseas such as quad biking, hiking between 3000m and 6000m or zip lining and incur emergency medical and hospital expenses.

This could include treatment for fractures, dislocations, dehydration, infections or other unexpected injuries sustained during a covered adventure activity overseas. You may also wish to check whether your policy can provide cover for overseas emergency medical evacuation or repatriation if you require urgent medical transport.

If you experience a medical emergency while participating in a covered adventure activity overseas, consider whether your travel insurance policy includes access to 24/7 emergency medical assistance services.

Depending on your situation and location, emergency assistance teams may be able to help arrange medical treatment, hospital admissions, emergency transport or communication support during an overseas medical emergency.

While rare, serious accidents resulting in death can happen during adventure activities. Consider whether your travel insurance policy includes benefits for accidental death if you suffer a serious injury resulting in death as a result of participating in a covered adventure activity during your trip.

These are only some of the situations that you might wish to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for adventure activities. Please do your own research to consider whether travel insurance is right for your personal and financial circumstances.

Before you decide whether you need travel insurance for adventure activities, you should read the PDS to check what our policies will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is the best travel insurance for adventure activities?

The best travel insurance for adventure activities can be considered as a policy that provides cover for the type of trip and activities you’re planning. When comparing travel insurance for adventure travel, it’s important to choose a policy that aligns with your specific travel plans and the adventure activities you intend to participate in.

Here are some examples of things you may wish to consider when comparing travel insurance policies with cover for adventure activities to help you decide which policy may be right for you:

Are you planning to participate in adventure activities on your trip?

You may wish to check whether your travel insurance policy provides cover for the types of adventure activities you intend to participate in during your trip. Cover for certain adventure activities may require an optional add-on, may incur an additional premium, and may be subject to eligibility criteria such as age limits and policy terms.

At Fast Cover, the Adventure Pack is available as an optional cover for Aussie travellers aged 74 years and under at the date of policy issue when purchased with a Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus or Frequent Traveller Saver policy. Keep in mind that adventure activities usually have participation limitations and conditions. Check if these align with how you intend to participate.

The best travel insurance for adventure activities isn’t always the cheapest policy available; it’s the policy that provides a suitable level of cover for your trip, destination and planned activities.

Fast Cover offers a range of travel insurance policies which travellers can add the Adventure Pack to. For example, our Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus and Frequent Traveller Saver policies all allow you to add on the Adventure Pack, but the policies vary in coverage and benefit limits available.

When comparing policies, always read the PDS, review what benefits are included, and check the applicable benefit limits, exclusions and conditions. Understanding the scope of cover can help you decide which policy may be right for your travel plans.

Getting sick or injured while participating in adventure activities overseas can be stressful and costly. Medical treatment, hospital stays and emergency transport overseas can quickly result in significant out of pocket expenses in some countries.

Fast Cover’s eligible international travel insurance policies can provide unlimited cover for:

  • overseas 24/7 emergency medical assistance
  • overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, and
  • overseas emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

in circumstances covered under the policy. ^

When comparing travel insurance for adventure activities, you may wish to consider whether the policy include similar medical benefits.

Have you booked flights, tours or accommodation for the adventure activities planned for your trip?

You may wish to consider whether your travel insurance policy includes cancellation and disruption benefits in case your travel plans are unexpectedly impacted by unforeseen circumstances, such as an unexpected illness, injury or other covered events before or during your trip.

These are just some of the considerations that you might wish to consider when reviewing the best travel insurance for adventure activities, so you know what cover is available to you before and during your trip. Please remember to do your own research regarding this to make an informed decision based on your personal and financial circumstances.

Before you decide on the best travel insurance for adventure activities, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, personal or financial situation or needs.

What’s not covered in our travel insurance for adventure activities?

It’s important to know not just what your travel insurance for adventure activities covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Here are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, quad biking in Bali, and you didn’t add the Adventure Pack to your eligible travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your overseas medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.

It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do on your trip.

The Adventure Pack is available at an additional premium as an optional cover for Aussie travellers aged 74 and under (at the date of policy issue) when they purchase a Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus or Frequent Traveller Saver policy. Travellers aged 75 and over at the date of policy issue are not eligible for the Adventure Pack.

The Adventure Pack does not provide cover if the claim or loss is for permanent disability under Benefit 10, loss of income under Benefit 11, or personal liability under Benefit 18.

Cover for all adventure activities listed in the Adventure Pack is limited to amateur participation. There is no cover for competitions or professional participation in adventure activities. Please note you must comply with the participation limitations and conditions of the adventure activities you participate in listed in the Adventure Pack.

If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, if you ride a quad bike without the required safety gear or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Remember that possession of certain drugs is illegal and different countries will have different laws. Using drugs or selling them can land you in trouble with the law overseas.

Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.

Known events are serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.

If you buy your travel insurance after an event is deemed a known event, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.

Perhaps you didn’t enjoy the weather, your adventure activity, or the experience didn’t live up to the expectation. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your trip has shaped up, your travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time there.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

Compare travel insurance benefits

Depending on the level of cover you take out with our travel insurance policy, Fast Cover can provide you with different benefits to suit your travel plans, helping you to better prepare for and deal with unexpected medical and financial circumstances. Compare some of our travel insurance policies below. Please note the Adventure Pack is not available with the Basics policy.

The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.
