What does travel insurance for surfing cover?

Fast Cover’s travel insurance policies provide cover for surfing up to 2 nautical miles off any land mass. Our policies include a wide range of benefits to help you better deal with unexpected events that may occur before and during your surfing holiday overseas or within Australia.

This is only a summary of some benefits available. Each policy has specific terms, conditions, exclusions, and limits. Not all benefits apply to all policies, so always read the PDS before deciding.

Medical emergencies can happen while surfing on your overseas trip. Fast Cover’s Aussie based team of experts are available to provide 24/7 support for overseas medical emergencies, depending on your situation and location. ^

Our Emergency Assistance team may be able to help arrange experienced medical support services in the event of unexpected circumstances that happen while surfing overseas. ^

If you get injured while surfing during your overseas trip, Fast Cover may be able to help with overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses in some circumstances which are covered under your policy. ^

Fast Cover’s international travel insurance policies may help cover reasonable and unexpected overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you become ill or are injured while surfing overseas and are not otherwise reimbursed.^

Please note there is no cover for any medical or ancillary expenses incurred in Australia.

Surfing injuries are not uncommon and access to emergency medical care could make a huge difference. Fast Cover may be able to help with the cost of getting you to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or even flying you back to Australia, in circumstances covered under your policy. ^

In case you are seriously injured or sick while surfing overseas, Fast Cover’s international travel insurance policies are available to provide cover for your reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or be brought back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision. The medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation must first be approved by Fast Cover. ^

Travelling with your surfboard? Cover may be available for the loss, theft or accidental damage of your luggage and personal items including your surfboard in situations covered under your policy. ^

The Luggage and Personal Effects benefit is an optional cover on the Basics policy. Please note there is no cover for your surfboard while it is in use or whilst it is unsupervised. Limits and sub-limits apply to how much you can claim for each item. Conditions including situations in which we would provide cover apply. ^

Cancelled surf triparen’t just disappointing, they can be expensive too. If you become unexpectedly sick or injured after purchasing your policy and need to cancel before your trip begins, our Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit may help protect the non-refundable trip bookings you’ve already paid for including flights, accommodation and tours in circumstances explained in your policy. ^

At Fast Cover, you can buy travel insurance for your holiday up to 12 months prior to your departure date, including before you've booked tours and any accommodation. Please note cancellation cover is only available with our Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Snow Sports Plus, Domestic Plus and Frequent Traveller Saver policies. ^

Natural disasters and severe weather could throw your surf trip off course If your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted due to severe weather or a natural disaster that begun after we issued the Certificate of Insurance, our Trip Disruption Expenses benefit is available to provide cover for reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses you incur whilst you are still on your trip. ^

If a disruption occurs during your trip which is outside of your control and arises from the reasons covered by your policy and explained in the PDS, we may be able to help. ^

What kind of surfing is covered?

Under our PDS, surfing is considered a surface water activity. Cover for surface water activities (other than sailing) up to 2 nautical miles off any land mass are automatically included under our list of covered non-contact sports and leisure activities available on all travel insurance policies.

Apart from surfing, surface water activities covered by our PDS include:

Do I need travel insurance for surfing?

Whether you’re planning to surf in the Gold Coast, bodysurf in Bali or windsurf in Europe, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control may arise and leave you with out of pocket expenses. Travel insurance with cover for surfing can help you prepare to deal with unexpected events that could impact your trip if the unexpected happens.

Here are some situations which you might consider when deciding if you need travel insurance with cover for surfing for your next trip and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations:

Consider whether your travel insurance can provide cover if you become sick or injured while surfing, bodysurfing or windsurfing and incur emergency medical and hospital expenses.

For example, Fast Covers Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit may include cover for treatment for the following injuries or illnesses sustained from surfing overseas:

  • Minor or serious reef cuts
  • Infection developing from minor reef cuts
  • Spinal injuries
  • Dengue fever or malaria, which is present across a number of island surf locations
  • Shark attacks
  • Injuries from colliding with other surfers and boards
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Dehydration

Please note medical and hospital expenses incurred in Australia are not covered by our policy even if the expenses are related to an injury or illness that occurred whilst overseas.

If you experience a medical emergencduring your overseas surf holiday, consider whether your travel insurance policy includes access to 24/7 emergency medical assistance services

Depending on your situation and location, emergency assistance teams may be able to help arrange medical treatment, hospital admissions, emergency transport or communication support during an overseas medical emergency.

You may also wish to check whether your policy can provide cover for overseas emergency medical evacuation or repatriation if you require urgent medical transport due to an injury such as breaking an arm or leg. This may be useful for surfers visiting remote surf locations.

If you're injured while surfing in a remote overseas destination, emergency medical evacuation may be needed to transport you to the nearest suitable medical facility. Medical transport by boat, helicopter or air ambulance can be expensive, so consider checking whether your policy includes cover for emergency evacuation or repatriation.

Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your surf trip. Rescheduling a cancelled surf holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your surf travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.

If you need to cancel your surf holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left out-of-pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your surf travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.

Before you decide whether you need travel insurance for surfing, you should read the PDS to check what our travel insurance policies will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Keep in mind that sports, snow sports and adventure activities usually have participation limitations and conditions. Check if these align with how you intend to participate.

What’s not covered in our travel insurance for surfing?

It’s important to know not just what your travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Here are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

Our PDS includes a list of covered sports and leisure activities. All other sports and leisure activities are excluded from cover under your policy unless you take out the relevant optional extra or policy required for your activity. For example, if you get injured in an accident while quad biking in Bali and you didn’t add the Adventure Pack to your eligible policy, or you get injured while skiing in Japan and you didn’t take out the Snow Sports Plus policy, you may be responsible for paying your overseas medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for these activities.

It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do on your trip.

Cover for sports listed in our PDS is limited to amateur participation. There is no cover for competitions or professional participation in sports activities. Please note you must comply with the participation limitations and conditions of the sports activities you participate in listed in the PDS.

If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, if you ride a bicycle without the required safety gear required by law.

Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.

Known events are serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.

If you buy your travel insurance after an event is deemed a known event, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.

Perhaps the weather was bad, you didn’t enjoy your surf trip or the surf location didn’t live up to the expectation. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your trip has shaped up, your travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time there.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

Compare travel insurance benefits

Depending on the level of cover you take out with our travel insurance policy, Fast Cover can provide you with different benefits to suit your travel plans, helping you to better prepare for and deal with unexpected medical and financial circumstances. Compare some of our travel insurance policies below.

The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.
