What does travel insurance for COVID-19 cover?

Fast Cover’s travel insurance for COVID-19 may cover two key areas: your health and your trip. On the medical side, our COVID-19 Overseas Emergency Medical, Hospital and Medical Evacuation Expenses benefit is available to provide cover for overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 while travelling, including medical evacuation back to Australia if needed. On the trip side, our COVID-19 Trip Cancellation and Disruption benefit is available to provide cover for the non-refundable bookings if you have to cancel your trip before you leave, as well as additional accommodation and travel costs if you're required to isolate or quarantine during your trip.

This is only a summary of some benefits available. Not all benefits apply to all policies, so always review the PDS before deciding to buy.

If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip, you may be covered for overseas medical expenses and medical support services if you experience a medical emergency due to contracting COVID-19 during your trip. ^

You may be covered for medical evacuation if you experience a medical emergency related to you contracting COVID-19 during your trip and require medical transport or evacuation to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment, or repatriation back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision. Please note there is a sub-limit of $20,000 for funeral or cremation costs and/or bringing your remains back to Australia. If you have an approved and valid Schengen visa for your trip, the limit for repatriation of your mortal remains from a Schengen listed country or state back to Australia is $60,000. ^

All medical evacuations and repatriations must be arranged and approved by Fast Cover before they take place.

Fast Cover provides cover for reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, as well as the cost of medical transfer, evacuation, or repatriation when these services are approved under your policy if you contract COVID-19 during your trip. ^

If you or someone listed on your policy is diagnosed with COVID-19 before departure, you may be covered for cancellation or rearrangement costs. ^

We may cover your non-refundable, pre-paid travel and accommodation bookings if you have to cancel because:

  • you test positive for COVID-19 and can't meet a cross-border entry requirement,
  • you're prevented from boarding because you tested positive or failed a screening procedure,
  • a doctor certifies you are medically unfit to travel due to COVID-19, or
  • a close relative in Australia is unexpectedly hospitalised in a critical condition or passes away from COVID-19

Where claims are made for COVID-19 trip cancellation and alternative travel arrangements for the same or similar expense, we will only consider the greater of the two amounts but not both. ^

If your trip is interrupted due to COVID-19, you may be covered for certain rearrangement or disruption expenses depending on your situation and policy ^

We may cover your non-refundable expenses if:

  • you're personally directed by a government health authority to isolate or quarantine or
  • you're a close contact of someone named on your certificate of insurance who tests positive, and you're directed to isolate or quarantine, or
  • you're prevented from boarding transport because you tested positive or failed a screening procedure. ^

Where claims are made for COVID-19 alternative travel arrangements and trip cancellation for the same or similar expense, we will only consider the greater of the two amounts but not both. ^

You may be covered if a close relative in Australia is unexpectedly hospitalised or passes away due to COVID-19 during your trip. ^

We may be able to provide cover for the reasonable additional costs for a registered or appropriately qualified carer to care of your dependants travelling with you in your fulltime care if you are unable to care for them due to being diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip. ^

Cover for existing medical conditions

Having an existing medical condition or concerns about COVID-19 doesn't mean yocan't get travel insurance that covers you. With Fast Cover, you may be able to obtain travel insurance that includes cover for existing medical conditions and COVID-19 related illness under the applicable policy benefits. Depending on the level of cover chosen, anyone listed on your policy including dependants can apply to do a medical screening to determine if their existing medical conditions can be included under the policy. ^

To find out if we can provide cover for a medical condition or COVID-19, you'll need to keep the following in mind when getting your travel insurance quote:

  • Any existing medical or pregnancy conditions you or any insured traveller have, or have had, in the 3 years prior to your policy issue date must be declared, and
  • Any new medical or pregnancy conditions that develop, or changes to your health, after your policy issue date and before you depart on your trip must also be declared, and
  • For COVID-19 related claims, your cover starts 72 hours from the time your policy was issued. ^

If you choose to declare your medical condition/s, all medical or pregnancy conditions must be declared. Each traveller has the choice to declare their medical conditions when applying for a travel insurance quote. If a condition is approved through the medical screening process, it will be listed on your Certificate of Insurance and will then be included under your cover. Any relevant medical or pregnancy condition that is not declared or not listed on your Certificate of Insurance will not be covered. ^

If you have declared a medical condition and your health changes after purchasing your policy but before you travel, you will need to contact Fast Cover for a medical re-screening. This process may adjust your premium and will determine whether your condition can continue to be included in your cover. ^

Please keep in mind that some existing medical conditions may require you to pay an additional cost for them to be included under your cover. You have the choice to either pay for this additional cost or not. If you choose to pay, the condition will be added to your policy and will be shown on your Certificate of Insurance. If you choose not to pay, that condition will not be covered.

How to apply for cover for existing medical conditions

If you have any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them. Our simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone.

Select who needs cover

Once you've added all travellers, to your policy, you can select those who wish to add cover for their existing medical conditions.

Take a medical screening

Answer a few questions online or over the phone about your health history. This helps us determine if your condition can be included as part of your cover.

Choose to add cover

We'll let you know if we can provide cover for the existing medical conditions. You can then choose if required, to pay the additional premium to add it to your policy or choose to decline the medical screening and not include cover for the existing medical conditions.

To find out more about our medical screening process, and how the policy will apply in relation to an existing medical condition, please read and consider the PDS for eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that apply.

Travel insurance cover options for COVID-19

At Fast Cover, we have a range of policy options available that include COVID-19 benefits. The options below are a summary of some of the COVID-19 related benefits available under our various policies. Please see the PDS for full details.

Comprehensive Travel Insurance

Fast Cover's Comprehensive policy offers the highest level of COVID-19 cover across our range. It includes unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 while travelling, plus up to $5,000 per adult for trip cancellation and disruption if COVID-19 affects your plans before or during your trip. It also covers additional accommodation costs during mandatory isolation or quarantine, emergency childcare costs for dependants, and medical evacuation if needed. ^

Standard Saver Travel Insurance

The Standard Saver policy provides many of the same COVID-19 benefits as our Comprehensive policy, including unlimited overseas emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation and disruption cover with a benefit limit of up to $3,000 per adult. It's a strong option if you want solid COVID-19 cover at a more budget-conscious price point, while still having cover for isolation costs and travel disruption. ^

Basics (Medical Only) Travel Insurance

Our Basics policy includes unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses for COVID-19, so if you get sick overseas you're covered for emergency medical care and evacuation. Please note that the Basics policy does not include COVID-19 trip cancellation and disruption cover, so it may be more suited to travellers who primarily want medical protection while overseas. ^

Snow Sports Plus Travel Insurance

Heading overseas to ski or snowboard? Our Snow Sports Plus policy includes COVID-19 cover alongside dedicated cover for snow sports activities. It includes unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 while travelling, plus up to $5,000 per adult for trip cancellation and disruption. ^

Frequent Traveller Saver

If you travel overseas more than once a year, our Frequent Traveller Saver policy lets you get COVID-19 cover across an unlimited number of trips in a 12-month period, up to a specified number of days per trip. It includes unlimited overseas emergency medical expenses for COVID-19 and up to $5,000 per policy for trip cancellation and disruption. ^

Domestic Plus Travel Insurance

Travelling within Australia? Our Domestic Plus policy includes COVID-19 cover for trip cancellation and disruption, with a benefit limit of up to $3,500 per adult if COVID-19 affects your plans before or during your trip. Domestic Plus policy does not include the COVID-19 emergency medical benefit. ^

Do I need COVID-19 travel insurance?

Whether you’re planning an overseas holiday, visiting family, or heading off on a long-awaited trip, unexpected COVID-19 situations can still impact your travel plans and lead to out-of-pocket expenses.

Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for COVID-19 and whether your policy may provide cover:

If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19, you may need to cancel or rearrange your travel plans. This could mean losing deposits or paying additional costs to reschedule flights and accommodation.

Consider whether your travel insurance can provide cover for cancellation or rearrangement expenses if you or someone listed on your policy is diagnosed before departure.

If you contract COVID-19 during your trip, you may need to delay your return home or change your travel plans. This can lead to unexpected accommodation and transport costs.

Consider whether your policy can provide cover for additional expenses if your trip is disrupted due to COVID-19 while you’re travelling.

Medical treatment overseas can be expensive, especially if hospital care or evacuation is required.

Consider whether your travel insurance can provide cover for overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip and whether medical evacuation is covered.

If you’re directed by a government authority to isolate or quarantine during your trip due to COVID-19, you may need to extend your stay and cover additional costs.

Consider whether your policy can provide cover for additional accommodation and travel expenses in these situations.

If a close relative in Australia is unexpectedly hospitalised or passes away due to COVID-19 while you’re travelling, you may need to return home early or change your plans.

Consider whether your travel insurance can provide cover for cancellation, disruption or rescheduling costs in these circumstances.

If you’re travelling with dependants and become unwell with COVID-19, you may not be able to care for them as planned.

Consider whether your policy can provide cover for reasonable additional childcare costs if you’re unable to care for your dependants during your trip.

These are only some of the situations that you might wish to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance with COVID-19 cover.

Before you decide whether you need travel insurance with COVID-19 cover for your  trip, you should read the PDS to check what our travel insurance will and won’t cover, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is the best Australian travel insurance for covid?

When travellers search for the best travel insurance for covid, the truth is there might be no single policy that suits everyone. The “best” option depends on your travel plans, where you’re going, your health, who you’re travelling with, and how comfortable you are with potential COVID-19 disruptions. The right COVID-19 travel insurance is the one that matches your trip and helps you understand what you may be covered for if COVID-19 affects your travel.

Here are some important factors to consider when comparing options and deciding what level of cover is right for your trip:

Not all travel insurance policies provide the same level of cover for COVID-19. The right level of cover depends on your trip, your destination, and how much financial protection you want if COVID-19 disrupts your travel.

At Fast Cover, COVID-19 cover is included across most policies as standard. Some policies may include cover for:

  • COVID-19 Overseas Emergency Medical, Hospital and Medical Evacuation Expenses, and
  • COVID-19 Trip Cancellation and Disruption.

If you're comparing options, start by looking at whether a policy includes these benefits and what the benefit limits are. Understanding the range of cover available will help you decide which policy is the most suitable option for your trip.

What if you test positive for COVID-19 while overseas and need medical attention? Medical costs overseas can be significantly higher than at home, and even a short hospital stay, or period of isolation can become expensive.

Some of Fast Cover's eligible policies include unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip. This includes emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if you need to be transported to another location or returned to Australia under medical supervision. Please note benefit limits apply for funeral or cremation and/or bringing your remains back to Australia and repatriation of your mortal remains from a Schengen listed country back to Australia.

When comparing policies, consider how COVID-19 medical cover applies to your destination and the types of medical situations that could arise. This can help you decide whether the level of medical cover on offer is right for your trip.

If you test positive for COVID-19 before your trip and can't travel, the costs can add up quickly, especially if you've already paid for flights, accommodation or tours that aren't refundable. COVID-19 trip cancellation cover may help reimburse you for eligible non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel due to a covered COVID-19 event.

Under Fast Cover's eligible policies, COVID-19 cancellation cover applies if:

  • you test positive and can't meet a cross-border entry requirement,
  • a doctor certifies you are medically unfit to travel due to COVID-19, or
  • a close relative in Australia is unexpectedly hospitalised or passes away from COVID-19.

When reviewing policies, check the maximum COVID-19 cancellation benefit limit and which COVID-19 events qualify for reimbursement. This makes it easier to compare policies and find one that aligns with your travel commitments. Note that your policy must have been purchased at least 72 hours before any COVID-19 diagnosis for cancellation cover to apply. ^

Existing medical conditions can sometimes make it harder to find travel insurance, but they don't have to stop you from travelling. If you have an existing medical condition alongside concerns about COVID-19it's worth checking whether your policy can cover both.

Fast Cover's travel insurance is available to provide cover for a range of existing medical conditions. Simply complete a medical screening online or over the phone to determine if cover is available for your condition. Your declared existing medical condition will be listed on your certificate of insurance whether coverage for the conditions have been approved or not. ^

When comparing policies for COVID-19, also check whether the policy can accommodate any existing medical conditions you or your fellow travellers have, so you're not caught out on either front.

COVID-19 can disrupt a trip in ways that go beyond getting sick, from being directed to isolate in a hotel to being prevented from boarding a flight because you've tested positive. If these situations arise, out-of-pocket costs can add up quickly.

Fast Cover's eligible policies include cover for additional accommodation and travel expenses if you're directed by a government health authority to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 during your trip. Cover also applies if you're a close contact of someone named on your certificate of insurance who tests positive.

Understanding how a policy responds to COVID-19 disruption can help ensure you're choosing the right cover for your trip. The best travel insurance for COVID-19 is the one that covers the situations that matter most to you, whether that's managing medical costs, recovering non-refundable bookings, or handling unexpected delays.

These are just some of the considerations that you might wish to consider when reviewing the best COVID0-19 travel insurance, so you know what cover is available to you before and during your trip and under what conditions.

Before you decide on the best COVID-19 travel insurance for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is not covered under our travel insurance with covid cover?

It's important to know not just what your travel insurance covers for COVID-19, but also what it doesn't, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying.

Below are some examples of when COVID-19 cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the full policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

There is no cover if you test positive for COVID-19 or are diagnosed with COVID-19 within 72 hours of purchasing your policy. This applies to both the COVID-19 Overseas Emergency Medical, Hospital and Medical Evacuation Expenses benefit and the COVID-19 Trip Cancellation and Disruption benefit.

Claims related to border closures, lockdowns, lockouts or other travel restrictions whether in Australia or overseas may not be covered.

There is no cover if you are deemed as a close contact of someone not named on your certificate of insurance who tests positive for COVID-19 and this disrupts your trip. This includes, if a friend or colleague you're travelling not named on your certificate of insurance tests positive for COVID-19.

The cost of COVID-19 tests is not covered, unless the test is undertaken as part of your hospitalisation in a country listed on your certificate of insurance.

There is no cover for claims arising from being denied boarding because you do not meet a COVID-19 vaccination requirement set by an airline, shipping line or other carrier.

There is no cover if you or a travelling companion decide not to travel or cut your trip short because of general concerns about COVID-19, a change in government travel advice, or an increase in COVID-19 case numbers in your destination.

There are exclusions that may apply for regular or routine check-ups or filling regular prescriptions as they are not considered medical emergencies. If you require regular medication, bring enough of what you’ll need for your trip overseas before you leave Australia.

Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website. If a country you enter in our quote box is currently a Do not Travel, the destination will appear red, and a warning will show stating that we are unable to cover said destination.

Known events are considered serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.

If you buy your travel insurance with covid cover after an event is deemed a known event, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

Compare COVID-19 travel insurance benefits

Depending on the level of cover you take out, Fast Cover can provide you with different COVID-19 benefits to suit your travel plans, helping you better prepare for and deal with unexpected medical and financial circumstances if COVID-19 affects your trip. Compare our travel insurance policies and COVID-19 benefits below.

The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

FAQs about COVID-19 travel insurance

If COVID 19 has affected your travel plans, date changes may be possible, but it depends on the status of your policy and what’s changing. The most practical first step is to contact the customer service team with your new intended travel dates, because they’ll need to check whether your policy can be amended under the policy rules, and whether any premium difference applies.

If you’ve already started your trip or you’re trying to extend cover while you’re travelling, different conditions can apply, so it’s important the change is requested as soon as you know your plans have shifted.

Every change and claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be approved if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

You may have cover for overseas emergency medical, hospital and medical evacuation costs if you are diagnosed with COVID 19 while you are in a country listed on your Certificate of insurance. This cover is available on all overseas policies and has unlimited benefit limits.

There are a few key conditions, like COVID 19 testing is only covered if it’s undertaken as part of your hospitalisation, and your medical costs must be confirmed in writing by a medical practitioner. You also need to notify the emergency team as soon as practicable if you’re admitted to hospital.

You may also have COVID 19 trip cancellation or trip disruption cover in certain situations, such as if you unexpectedly test positive and can’t meet a cross-border entry requirement, you are refused boarding due to a positive test or failed screening, or a medical practitioner confirms you are medically unfit to travel due to COVID 19.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If you’re personally directed by a government health authority to isolate or quarantine overseas during your trip, you may be able to claim for reasonable additional accommodation and travel costs until you can continue travelling at the earliest possible time. This can include the extra accommodation costs linked to your isolation or quarantine.

This can also apply if you’re directed to quarantine because you’re a close contact of someone listed on your policy who has tested positive, or if you’re prevented from boarding a carrier because you’ve tested positive or failed screening.

If your trip end date needs to change because you can’t travel home yet, cover may be extended in some situations where your trip is necessarily extended due to an unforeseeable circumstance outside your control, but it needs to be approved first.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

It’s entirely your decision whether to take out travel insurance for your trip. However, it’s a good idea to check carefully whether your destination country, airline, cruise company, or tour operator requires you to have travel insurance as a condition of travel. Some may specifically ask for proof of cover, particularly for COVID-19 related medical expenses

Having a policy in place can also help protect you against unexpected costs if you become unwell with COVID-19 while overseas, need medical treatment, or are required to quarantine after a positive test, provided these are covered under your policy. Always check the details in PDS and TMD though before you decide whether you need travel insurance during COVID-19.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If you contract COVID-19 overseas and need medical treatment, you may be able to claim for eligible overseas medical expenses, including doctors’ fees, as long as you’re travelling in a country shown on your Certificate of Insurance and your policy includes COVID 19 Overseas Emergency Medical, Hospital and Medical Evacuation Expenses. This benefit is available on our overseas policies, but it isn’t included on our Domestic Plus policy.

A few key conditions apply. Your medical costs need to be medically necessary and confirmed in writing by a medical practitioner. COVID-19 testing is only covered when it’s part of your hospitalisation. If you’re admitted to hospital, you need to notify the emergency assistance team as soon as reasonably possible.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If your trip is cancelled or rescheduled due to COVID-19, you should first contact your airline, cruise line, or travel provider to see if they will refund, credit, or rebook your travel. Travel insurance does not provide cover for every COVID-19 situation.

Depending on the policy you purchased, you may have some cover for COVID-19 Trip Cancellation and Disruption if you personally test positive for COVID-19 and can no longer travel as planned. However, there is no cover if your trip is affected by government border closures, quarantine requirements not linked to a diagnosis, or general changes made by airlines or travel providers.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

The Loss of Income benefit only applies if you are injured on your overseas trip and, as a direct result of that injury, you are unable to return to your usual occupation in Australia due to circumstances as explained in the PDS. This benefit does not extend to claims that arise from illness, including COVID-19.

This means that if your return home is delayed because you have contracted COVID-19, you would not be able to claim for loss of income under this benefit.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

There is cover for cancellation, rescheduling fees and lost deposits for travel and accommodation arrangements that you have paid in advance and cannot recover in any other way (such as a travel credit) if you are unexpectedly prevented from boarding an airline, bus line, shipping line or rail authority because you have tested positive for COVID-19 or failed a COVID-19 screening procedure administered by the airline, bus line, shipping line or rail authority. This cover is not available on the Basics policy.

There is no cover if your claim arises:

  • from you acting unlawfully or breaking any government prohibition, laws or regulation including visa requirements (such as COVID-19 vaccination requirements).
  • from the denial of boarding of any airline, shipping line or other carrier due to COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

Please note: There is no cover for any claims directly or indirectly related to COVID-19 for any event that arises within the first 72 hours of purchasing your policy.

There is only cover for COVID-19 related claims if you purchased your policy after the 10th February 2022, unless you purchased the optional COVID-19 Pack and it appears on your Certificate of Insurance. Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas and cannot return home on your planned date, you may have cover under your policy for certain additional costs. This can include:

  • COVID-19 Overseas Emergency Medical, Hospital and Medical Evacuation Expenses if you need treatment while overseas.
  • COVID-19 Trip Cancellation and Disruption for reasonable additional accommodation and travel costs until you are able to return home, provided the disruption arises because you unexpectedly tested positive to COVID-19 and a medical practitioner certifies that you are medically unfit to travel due to your COVID 19 diagnosis. .

You will need to provide medical evidence, such as a report or test result from a qualified practitioner, to support your claim.

It’s important to note that cover is not available for all situations. There is also no cover for any COVID-19 related event that arises within the first 72 hours of purchasing your policy.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If a person named on your Certificate of Insurance tests positive for COVID-19 during your trip, and you are personally directed by a government health authority to isolate or quarantine as a result, depending on the policy chosen, you may be able to claim for your reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses under the COVID-19 Trip Disruption benefit, up to the limits outlined in your policy.

You will need to provide documentation, such as the positive COVID-19 test result from a medical practitioner for the insured person, along with official confirmation of your quarantine or isolation order.

It’s important to note that there is no cover for general government-mandated quarantine requirements that are not linked to a COVID-19 diagnosis, or if your claim relates to COVID-19 within the first 72 hours of purchasing your policy.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If you no longer wish to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic and need to cancel your travel insurance policy, your options will depend on when you purchased the policy and whether your trip has started.

  • If you are within the 25-day cooling-off period and your trip has not yet begun, you can generally cancel your policy and receive a full refund of your premium.
  • If the cooling-off period has passed, but your trip has not yet started, you may still be able to make changes to the departure and return dates of your policy if your travel plans are postponed. Any premium differences will be adjusted depending on your new trip details.
  • If your trip has already commenced or if you have made a claim or intend to make a claim or have exercised any of your rights under policy such as using your travel insurance policy to obtain a visa or enter into a country, the policy cannot be cancelled for a refund.

It’s important to note that travel insurance does not provide cover for every COVID-19 situation, and there is no cover for cancellation simply because of general concerns about the pandemic or government travel restrictions.

Every request and claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be approved if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before making any decisions.

If you decide to cancel your trip due to concern or fear of COVID-19, this is not a covered event under travel insurance. Policies only provide cancellation cover if your trip is disrupted by specific insured circumstances, such as being diagnosed as COVID-19 positive by a medical practitioner following a PCR test, or if another covered event directly prevents you from travelling.

Changing your mind about travel or cancelling because you are worried about the general risks of COVID-19, is not considered a valid reason for cancellation.

You have a 25-day cooling off period, in which you can request to cancel your policy within this period for a full refund, provided you have fulfilled the conditions outlined in the PDS.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
