Key takeaways about Fast Cover’s Already Overseas travel insurance

  1. No-cover period: Our Already Overseas policy has a 48-hour no-cover period which applies to all benefits, and a 72-hour no-cover period for Covid-19 related benefits.^

  2. Events that happen before your policy coverage starts: An Already Overseas policy doesn’t cover anything that happens before your policy start date, or during the no-cover periods. If you’ve been overseas for a few days and forgot to take out travel insurance, you won’t be able to claim anything that happened before you took out the policy or during the no-cover period.^

  3. Fixed excess: A $500 excess for all claims except where the benefit excess is already $0.

  4. Policy options: You may be able to purchase a Standard Saver, Comprehensive or a Snow Sports Plus Policy if you are already overseas provided you meet the eligibility requirements.^

  5. Eligibility criteria: You must be aged 65 or under at the time of purchase and have been overseas for less than 14 days or have held travel insurance since leaving Australia that is still current or expired no more than 14 days ago and meet other eligibility requirements as per the PDS.^

What does Fast Cover’s Already Overseas travel insurance policy cover?

If you are already overseas and thinking about getting cover for the rest of your trip, it helps to understand the benefits that may be available on an Already Overseas policy. Eligible travellers may be able to purchase Fast Cover’s Comprehensive, Standard Saver or Snow Sports Plus policy while already overseas to help cover some unexpected events that occur after your policy start date and after any applicable waiting period has ended, subject to the PDS. ^

While the benefits available depend on the level of cover you choose, here are some examples of benefits that may be included in an Already Overseas travel insurance policy.

This is only a summary of some benefits available. Not all benefits apply to all policies, so always review the PDS before deciding to buy.

If your luggage or personal items go missing, are stolen or accidentally damaged while you are overseas, Fast Cover may provide cover forluggage and personal itemssuch as laptops, cameras, and phones.

Benefit limits, sub-limits and depreciation may apply to how much can be claimed for each item, and conditions set out when and how cover applies. For full details, it’s important to read the PDS to understand your entitlements and any exclusions that may apply. ^

Travel delays can happen for many reasons. If your pre-booked transport is cancelled and rescheduled, or delayed due to an event covered by your policy, Fast Cover’s Travel Delay Expenses benefit is available to reimburse you for the reasonable cost of extra meals and accommodation. ^

This benefit can provide cover of up to $200 for each traveller (excluding dependants) if your scheduled transport is delayed for at least 6 hours from the time your transport was scheduled to depart, due to circumstances outside your control. For each subsequent full 24-hour period beyond the initial 6 hour delay until your rescheduled departure time, this benefit allows for an additional $200 ^

Pairing a winter holiday with snow sports? Unexpected events at the snow can snowball into costly expenses. If you’re planning to ski or snowboard overseas, answer yes to ‘Skiing or Snowboarding’ during your quote application. This gives you the option to purchase a “Snow Sports Plus Policy” which can provide cover for costs associated with ski and snow sports. ^

Below are some examples of things that may be covered in your snow sports benefits:

  • loss or theft of, or accidental damage to snow sports equipment,
  • for hiring replacement snow sports equipment that is necessary to continue with your original itinerary if snow sports equipment owned by you has been misdirected or delayed for a period of more than 24-hours, or has been accidentally damaged, lost or stolen during your trip,
  • if you are injured or become sick during your trip and are unable to utilise the full duration of your pre-booked and pre-paid lift passes, snow sports equipment hire, or lessons, we will reimburse you the percentage amount of the unused portion for each insured person, and
  • the cost of transport and lift passes at an alternate resort,

in conditions and circumstances covered under your policy and as per limits and sub limits set out in our PDS. ^

The Snow Sports Plus Already Overseas policy is available as an option for Aussie travellers aged 65 and under at the date of policy issue when they purchasethe policy while they are already overseas. ^

For more details visit our page on travel insurance for skiing and snowboarding and read ourPDS for terms and conditions of cover for Snow Sports.

If your travel plans include cruising, you can choose to add cruise cover to your Already Overseas insurance policy for additional cover in case of unexpected emergencies on-board the cruise ship where no support or reimbursement is provided by the cruise company for these emergencies. ^

You may still purchase the policy even if your cruise has already begun, provided you meet all eligibility requirements. Please note that cover will not apply until the 48-hour no cover period has ended. ^

If you wish to be covered while travelling on a cruise ship, you must specify cruise cover at the time of purchase based on your destination and length of your cruise trip:

  • If you are travelling within Australian waters, the New Zealand or the South Pacific region for 1 night or more, you must specify cruise cover at the time of purchase
  • If you are travelling on a cruise within Asia, Europe or Worldwide regions for 4 nights or more, you must specify cruise cover at the time of purchase

By adding this option, your policy benefits will extend to when you’re on a cruise, whether it’s a domestic or international voyage. Adding cruise cover to your policy allows you to have cover both on board and on land, helping you stay covered throughout your entire trip. ^

For more details, visit our page on travel insurance for cruises and read ourPDS for terms and conditions of cover for travelling on cruise ships.

Can travel insurance still cover my existing medical conditions if I am already overseas?

Having an existing medical condition doesn’t mean you can’t get travel insurance while already overseas. With Fast Cover, you may be able to get an Already Overseas travel insurance that includes cover for your or your dependants’ existing medical condition under applicable policy benefits.

To find out if we can provide cover for your condition, you’ll need to complete a medical screening during your quote journey where you tell us about:

  • Any medical or pregnancy conditions you have or have had during the period of 3 years prior to your policy issue date, and
  • Any new medical or pregnancy conditions that develop, or changes to your health, after your policy issue date and before you depart on your trip.

It’s important that you declare all relevant medical or pregnancy conditions when you apply for a quote for an Already Overseas policy. If your condition is approved through the medical screening process, it will be listed on your Certificate of Insurance and will then be included under your cover. Any relevant medical or pregnancy condition that is not declared or not listed on your Certificate of Insurance will not be covered.

Please keep in mind that some existing medical conditions may require you to pay an additional cost for them to be included under your cover. You have the choice to either pay for this additional cost or not. If you choose to pay, the condition will be added to your policy and shown on your Certificate of Insurance. If you choose not to pay, that condition will not be covered and will still show on your Certificate of Insurance indicating that the condition(s) is not covered.

If your health changes after purchasing your policy but before you travel, you will need to contact Fast Cover for a medical re-screening. This process may adjust your premium and will determine whether your condition can continue to be covered

How to apply for cover for existing medical conditions

If you have any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them during your trip. Our simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone to help you find out if your medical condition or pregnancy condition can be covered under your travel insurance policy.

Select who needs cover

Once you've added all travellers, to your policy, you can select those who wish to add cover for any existing medical conditions.

Take a medical screening

Answer a few questions online or over the phone about your health history. This helps us determine if your condition can be covered.

Choose to add cover

We'll let you know if we can provide cover for any existing medical conditions. You can then choose to add it to your policy which may incur an additional premium.

To find out more about our medical screening process, and how the policy will apply in relation to an existing medical condition, please read and consider the PDS for eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that apply.

Do I need travel insurance if I am already overseas?

Travelling overseas can be exciting, but even with the best plans, things don’t always go smoothly. Fast Cover’s Already Overseas travel insurance is designed to help Australians overseas handle many of those unexpected bumps in the road, from medical emergencies to lost bags or travel delays, so you can focus on enjoying the rest of your trip.

Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance while you are already overseas:

One of the biggest concerns for travellers already overseas is what would happen if they became unexpectedly ill or injured overseas.

Fast Cover’s Already Overseas policy options including Comprehensive, Standard Saver and Snow Sports Plus include cover for overseas medical and hospital expenses helping travellers already overseas cover these costs abroad. ^

Even with careful planning, travel can be unpredictable. Flights can be delayed, connections missed, or plans changed by severe weather. Those moments can quickly add unexpected costs for extra nights of accommodation, last-minute meals, or rebooked transport, cutting into your budget.

Our Already Overseas policy options including Comprehensive and Snow Sports Plus may provide cover for some of the reasonable additional expenses that come from travel delays, depending on your circumstances and what’s covered under your policy. ^

Severe weather, natural disasters, strikes, riots and civil protests could disrupt the course of your trip.

Our Already Overseas policies include the Trip Disruption Expenses benefit, if you purchase a Comprehensive or Snow Sports Plus policy. This benefit is available to provide cover for the reimbursement of your reasonable additional travel, accommodation and meal expenses which you cannot recover from any other source, if a disruption occurs during your trip which is outside of your control and arises from the reasons covered by your policy and explained in the PDS. ^

Lost, stolen or damaged luggage and personal items can create ongoing hassles during your solo adventure. Replacing essentials like your laptop, camera, or travel gear can be costly.

Cover for luggage and personal items is automatically included with all Fast Cover Already Overseas policies.^

Travel plans evolve; you might book a cruise, hire a motorbike, or even decide to try an adventure activity like abseiling. It is important to consider the right cover before starting those activities.

If you are planning higher-risk activities or specific types of travel mid-trip, our Already Overseas policy allows you to select optional extras at the time of purchase, subject to eligibility and policy terms.

These are only some of the situations that you might wish to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance while already overseas.

Before you decide whether you need travel insurance while already abroad, you should read the PDS to check what our travel insurance will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is the best travel insurance for travellers who are already overseas?

The best travel insurance policy for travellers who are already overseas is the one that matches your travel plans, provides the level of cover you need, and includes benefits and limits suited to your circumstances. Here are some important factors to consider when comparing travel insurance options for your trip when you’re already overseas:

The right travel insurance policy for your trip should match your destination, trip type, and budget. Fast Cover offers several levels of cover for Already Overseas policies so you can choose what fits your journey best, from Standard Saver, to Comprehensive and Snow Sports Plus.

When comparing options, check what’s included and what the benefit limits are for each policy. Understanding the scope of cover can help you find the best travel insurance for your needs.

The type of activities you plan on doing during your trip can impact the level of cover you need. Some travellers are simply sightseeing or relaxing, while others might be heading overseas for adventure like quad biking, hiking at high altitudes, or riding a motorcycle.

When comparing policies, check if they include cover for these activities or allow you to add optional extras to provide cover for these activities. Depending on the policy you choose with Fast Cover, you may be able to add optional extras for an additional premium to provide cover for a wide range of activities and adventures.

Sometimes, even the best-planned trip can take an unexpected turn. Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions can disrupt travel plans with little notice, leaving travellers stranded, rerouted, and facing unexpected costs for additional travel and accommodation.

Depending on the policy you choose, Fast Cover may be able to help with reasonable additional expenses for accommodation, meals and transport, when your trip delayed or disrupted due to natural disaster in circumstances covered under your policy. ^

Are you already overseas on a solo adventure, a family trip during the school holidays or perhaps a romantic cruise getaway?

You may wish to check whether an already overseas policy provides cover for singles, couples and families. Consider how the policy benefits and benefit limits apply to all travellers listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

Getting sick or injured while travelling can be stressful and costly. When comparing already overseas travel insurance policy options, look at the medical benefits included, their limits, and whether 24/7 emergency medical assistance is included. Choosing a policy that offers reliable medical support when you need it most can save you both money and stress during your trip.

All Fast Cover’s international Already Overseas travel insurance option provides unlimited cover for:

  • overseas 24/7 emergency medical assistance,
  • overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, and
  • overseas emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

in circumstances covered under the policy.^

These are just some of the factors you might wish to consider when choosing the best travel insurance while already overseas, so you know what cover is available to you before and during your trip and under what conditions.

Before you decide on the best travel insurance for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is not covered by our Already Overseas travel insurance policy options for Aussies already abroad?

When comparing travel insurance, it’s just as important to know what isn’t covered as it is to know what is covered. Like all insurance products, Fast Cover’s Already Overseas policies have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits that may apply that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Below are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

If an illness, injury, delay, loss or disruption happens before you purchase your Already Overseas policy, it is unlikely to be covered.

Our Already Overseas travel insurance is designed to provide cover for unexpected events that occur after your policy start date and after any applicable waiting period has ended.

Already Overseas policies include a 48-hour waiting period after purchase that applies to all benefits. If an illness, injury, loss or disruption occurs during this waiting period, it is unlikely to be covered.

This means if you purchase a policy today and something happens within the next 48 hours of purchasing the policy, you may not be eligible to claim for that event.

If you’re injured while breaking the law overseas, your Already Overseas travel insurance policy is unlikely to cover the incident. This includes scenarios such as riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet, driving without the proper licence, or operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Local laws vary significantly between countries and what may be legal in Australia could be prohibited elsewhere so you should always check local regulations before you travel. For example, in some destinations even riding a scooter without the correct international licence is illegal and could leave you without cover if an accident occurs. Engaging in illegal drug use or carrying prohibited substances could also result in both criminal charges overseas and the denial of any related insurance claim.

Whilst it may not be illegal to have a drink overseas, alcohol consumption laws vary from country to country, and between regions within some countries. Make sure to research your travel destinations and follow the local laws. Keep in mind that if you’ve drunk alcohol excessively, there are certain exclusions that may likely apply to your travel insurance policy. As an example, if you're involved in an accident while under the influence of alcohol and in control of a vehicle, you may not have cover under your policy.

If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, riding a motorcycle, and you didn’t add the Motorcycle Pack to your Already Overseas travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your overseas medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.

It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas.

If your belongings are stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to claim for the stolen item. For example, if you leave your bag with your wallet and passport inside it on the beach while you go for a swim, this may be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered.

Make sure you keep your belongings with you at all times or keep them in a secure location and take reasonable measures to secure them at all times and at all places.

There are exclusions that may apply for regular or routine check-ups or filling regular prescriptions as they are not considered medical emergencies. If you require regular medication, bring enough of what you’ll need for your holiday overseas before you leave Australia.

Should the Australian Government release a warning on the government’s official Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that might  apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.

Known events are usually considered as serious situations from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and the cover on your travel insurance policy.

If you buy your travel insurance after an event is a known event, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your travel destination as well as information on the government’s official Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your travel insurance policy.

Perhaps the weather was bad, the tourist attractions were too crowded, or your accommodation didn’t live up to the pictures online. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your trip has shaped up, your travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your holiday.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

FAQs about travel insurance when already overseas

Our policies are priced depending on your age, where you're travelling to, how long you're travelling for and the type of activities that you'll be doing. From our experience, a traveller who buys a policy after they have already left Australia is more likely to make a claim, so the premium of an Already Overseas policy also reflects that risk.

Other eligibility requirements apply if you are purchasing a policy when you have already left Australia.

Accidents can happen to anyone and anytime, and the cost of medical cover in some countries can run in the tens of thousands of dollars. If something does go wrong on your holiday, having a travel insurance policy to cover for the unexpected may far exceed the cost of the policy itself.

Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Any advice that is provided to you is general in nature and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial circumstances or needs. Before you make any decisions about the product, you should read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to ensure that it is suitable to you.

If you are travelling within Australia and have already left home, you are not able to purchase a policy with us, as your trip has already started.

Cover must be arranged before you depart on your journey. Once your domestic trip has begun, you are no longer eligible to take out a new policy for that trip.

Fast Cover’s Already Overseas policy is only available for travellers who are already overseas on an international trip. It does not apply to trips within Australia.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If you are still in Australia and have not yet departed, you cannot purchase an Already Overseas policy to begin once you arrive overseas.

An Already Overseas policy can only be purchased when you are already overseas, and you meet all eligibility criteria at the time of purchase. It is not available to buy in advance while you are still in Australia.

If you are planning an overseas trip and have not yet left Australia, you would need to purchase a standard international travel insurance policy before you depart.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If you’ve already left Australia without travel insurance, or if your existing cover has recently expired, you may still be able to buy an Already Overseas policy with Fast Cover, depending on your eligibility.

This type of policy is available under our Standard Saver, Comprehensive, or Snow Sports Plus plans if you’re already overseas at the time you purchase your cover, as long as you meet all of the following requirements:

  • You have been overseas for less than 14 days, or have been insured under a travel insurance policy since you left Australia that is current or has been expired for no more than 14 days; and
  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident normally residing in Australia. Individuals on an Australian temporary resident visa including those on a working holiday visa or temporary visitors including those on a tourist visa, are not eligible to purchase this policy after departing Australia; and
  • You hold a valid Australian Medicare card; and
  • You have a home in Australia to which you intend to return; and
  • Your trip ends in Australia; and
  • You are aged 65years and under at the time of purchase; and
  • You declare to us at the time of purchase that you are already overseas; and
  • We agree to issue you a policy and specify your status as an already overseas in the certificate of insurance

Key things to know when buying cover while overseas

  • A 48-hour waiting period applies to all benefits. This means there’s no cover for any event that occurs within the first 48 hours after purchasing your policy.
  • A $500 excess applies for all claims except where benefit excess is already $0.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
