Travel Insurance in Times of Conflict

Since the beginning of 2024, tensions in the Middle East have escalated dramatically, with Israel and Iran engaging in direct conflict. As the situation unfolds, many travellers may find themselves wondering about the implications for travel insurance and their upcoming trips. In this blog post, we'll explore what may happen to travel insurance in times of war and conflict, and how it may affect your travel plans.

Travel Insurance in Times of Conflict

In April 2024, Qantas temporarily suspended its direct flights from Perth to London over concerns about flying through Iranian airspace following an escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran. Qantas will instead operate its Perth-London route via a stop in Singapore for the outward journey while keeping the return from London a non-stop service with a modified flight route to avoid Iranian airspace.

The Impact of Conflict on Travel Insurance

During times of war or conflict, travel insurance coverage can be significantly impacted*. Travel insurance policies often include a range of exclusions such as exclusions relating to acts of war, invasion, acts of foreign enemies, and other warlike operations. This means that if your travel plans are disrupted or you incur losses because of the events, your travel insurance policy may not provide coverage it might otherwise provide. Each travel insurance policy is different, and all individual’s circumstances are unique, therefore, you should ensure that you consider the relevant travel insurer’s policy for information on eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, exclusions and limits that apply prior to purchasing a policy.
