Cheap Flight Travel Insurance

Explore the advantages that flight travel insurance can provide and take measures to protect your journey against some of the unexpected costs associated with flight delays, trip cancellations, and unforeseen events that can happen on any holiday.

Ah, the thrill of air travel! There’s nothing quite like the excitement of packing your bags, heading to the airport, and embarking on a new adventure. The anticipation of soaring through the clouds to a far-off destination can make anyone’s heart flutter. Whether you're off to a tropical paradise, bustling city, or quaint countryside, the journey begins the moment you step onto that plane.

However, even the most idyllic trips, regardless of how well planned they are, can come with unexpected hiccups. What if you’re unexpectedly injured before your trip starts and you can’t make that flight? Or if you’re all ready to travel but your flight is delayed or cancelled?  Having travel insurance that includes cover for some of those unexpected hiccups can mean you might just avoid being left out of pocket.

What is Flight Travel Insurance?

We at Fast Cover consider Flight travel insurance to be any of our benefits that can cover you for various unforeseen events that could disrupt your travel plans. So whether you've incurred additional meal and accommodation expenses as a result of a flight that's been delayed for at least 6 hours because of an airline’s operational issues, your flight's been cancelled  due to severe weather or you have to cancel your flight because you’re unexpectedly sick for reasons covered under the policy, Fast Cover travel insurance may be able to provide cover for those extra meal and accommodation costs, cancelled flights, and even for your flights to resume your trip if it was cut short!

Key Benefits of Fast Cover Flight Travel Insurance

Regardless of the flight travel insurance option that you choose for your trip, one important benefit we include with all our international policies is the Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit.

Unless you’re in a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia (where many of your medical expenses may be covered under Medicare), you’ll likely be responsible for all your medical expenses if you unexpectedly fall sick or are injured while travelling overseas. Having cover for these unexpected medical situations can potentially save you thousands of dollars

The following are some of the benefits that may be able to provide cover if the flights for your trip are affected. However, theyre only available with select policies, so you should check that the policy that you choose for your trip includes the benefits that you need for your trip.

Also, cover does depend on your specific circumstances, and may not be available for every situation, as exclusions may apply, so always check the PDS to find out the circumstances in which you can and can't be covered, and the relevant conditions.

Luggage and personal effects

Whether the airline lost your luggage, or your personal belongings are stolen from you or are accidentally damaged, you can receive compensation for your lost, stolen or accidentally damaged items that you bring with you on your trip. Whilst this benefit seems fairly straight forward, conditions do apply, including limits to how much you can claim for each type of item, a limit on the maximum amount that you can claim for under the policy that you have chosen for your trip, and the situations in which we would provide cover. For example, the maximum that we would pay for a pair of sunglasses is $750, but if you leave any of your items unattended, for example at the beach whilst you're swimming and its lost or stolen, your claim may be denied, as this is an exclusion under our policies. To understand more about cover for your luggage and personal effects, read our page on luggage and personal effects

Tips: Get a written statement from the airline confirming that they lost your luggage. If your items are stolen from you, you must report the theft as soon as practicable, but preferably within 24 hours to the police or to the office of the carrier that you were travelling on when the theft occurred.

Trip Disruption Expenses

Even the best planned trip can be undone by the unexpected. If your trip is unexpectedly interrupted for reasons covered under the policy and youre not able to continue your trip as planned, you may have cover under the policy benefits to claim for reimbursement of your non-refundable deposits, additional flight or other travel costs, accommodation and meals. For example, if a close relative of yours back in Australia is hospitalised due to an unexpected illness and the circumstances fall within the terms and conditions of the policy, you may be covered for the costs that you incur to return home to be with them. However, it’s important to review the policy wording for relevant conditions, limits, sub limits and exclusions that may apply. For example, if the close relative doesn't meet our ‘close relative conditions’ definition, or if you were already aware at the time that you purchased your policy that there was a possibility that your close relative was going to be hospitalised, cover may not be provided as the hospitalisation was not unexpected.

Travel Delay Expenses

Bad weather or airline operational issues can cause travel delays and throw a spanner in the works. With Fast Cover’s Travel Delay Expenses benefit, you can be reimbursed for your reasonable additional meal and accommodation expenses up to a maximum of $200 per day, and up to a maximum of $2000 in total, if your pre-booked flight or other carrier is cancelled, rescheduled, or delayed by at least 6 hours due to circumstances beyond your control.

When considering any policy, make sure you go through the policy details to understand any applicable conditions, limits, sub limits and exclusions that may affect your cover. For example, if your flight is delayed for less than 6 hours, you should talk to your airline to seek compensation, as delays shorter than 6 hours aren’t covered under this benefit.

Tip: Get a written statement from the airline confirming the reason for the cancellation and rescheduling or delay, how long it lasted and any compensation they have provided you.

Special Event Transport Expenses

Planned to go to a special event, but your flight has been cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted, and you may not get there on time? The Special Event Transport Expenses benefit provides certain cover to book an alternative flight or other transport to help you make it to your special event. This benefit is only available if you have a special event (pre-booked, pre-paid and pre-arranged wedding, funeral, conference, sporting event, cruise or tour package) to attend. Other conditions and exclusions will apply, so it's important to review the policy details when considering your policy options.

Tip: If the airline cancels, delays or reschedules your flight, get written confirmation from the airline detailing the reason for the cancellation, delay or rescheduling, and any compensation they have given you.

Travel Resumption Expenses

If you had to cut your trip short and fly home early because of a close relative's unexpected medical emergency back in Australia, the Trip Resumption Expenses benefit can cover the cost of your airfare for you to return to the place where it was interrupted. However, as with all benefits, terms, conditions, limits, sub limits and exclusions as detailed in the PDS do apply, including (but not limited to); your close relative’s medical emergency needing to meet our definition of ‘close relative conditions’, you must have more than 14 days remaining on your period of insurance, and you must resume your trip within 6 months of your return to Australia.

Trip Cancellation Expenses

Life happens, and sometimes you need to unexpectedly cancel or reschedule your trip. Our Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit can reimburse you for the non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings that you’ve made for your trip - not just for the flights, but also any accommodation, cruises and tours. Keep in mind though, that cover is only available in certain situations, for example,  theres no cover under this benefit for the cancellation, delay or rescheduling of your flight by an airline, unless its due to a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, severe weather or natural disaster, so it's important to be aware of the conditions and exclusions that may apply to your policy.

Delay of luggage

Your luggage didn’t turn up at the overseas carousel after your flight?  The Delay of Luggage and Personal Effects benefit can reimburse you for the cost to purchase essential items of clothing or other personal items, if your luggage and personal effects are delayed, misdirected or misplaced by your airline or other carrier for more than 12 hours, and the airline won’t provide you with compensation for those essential items. However, you should consider the exclusions that apply to this benefit, as not all situations can be covered. For example, there’s no cover if your luggage and personal effects are delayed on the final return leg of your trip home, as the benefit is provided to assist you whilst you're on your trip.

Tip: Get a written statement from the airline confirming the delay, misdirection or misplacement of your luggage.

To find out more about the circumstances that can and can’t be covered, and the policies that the benefits are available under, read the PDS for more information on the policy terms, conditions, limits, sub limits and exclusions that apply.

What can’t Flight travel insurance cover?

As mentioned above, travel insurance can’t cover all situations that may occur while you’re on your trip.

Some (but not all) examples of circumstances which may not be covered under our policies relating to flight travel insurance include:

  • Where you’ve already been, or can be, compensated (eg refund, credit or  voucher) by your travel provider for your out of pocket expenses.
  • When you don’t comply with the conditions as specified in our PDS.
  • For the time that you’ve lost and the associated frustrations relating to waiting to board your delayed and rescheduled flight. This is because travel insurance is designed to help protect customers financially in case of an emergency or an unforeseen event, for example, non-refundable payments or out of pocket meal or accommodation expenses, and not for the loss of your enjoyment.
  • When you submit a claim for an expense that's not covered under your policy.
  • If you don’t provide documentation to support your claim, including documentation from your airline to confirm travel delays, flight cancellations and lost luggage.

Our claims team will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the PDS and your Certificate of Insurance, as we do understand that every traveller’s situation is going to be different.

Price will depend on a range of factors, including but not limited to, the type of policy chosen, age, destination, time between policy purchase and travel, any existing medical conditions, and any additional options chosen, to name a few.

If you have an existing medical condition and want to have cover for them, we offer medical screening for your medical condition. Who can take out flight travel insurance?

Any traveller flying internationally or simply around Australia can apply for cover if they want to protect the payments that they’ve made for their flights:

  • Groups
  • Backpackers
  • Singles
  • Couples
  • Travellers doing the IEC
  • Students on a gap year
  • Seniors
  • Business travellers
  • Frequent travellers

Every traveller has different insurance cover needs, and eligibility criteria do apply, so you should always check that the flight travel insurance policy that you choose for your trip suits the trip that you’re taking by reading the PDS.

Customise your flight travel insurance policy

You can customise your policy by paying an additional premium to add cover for the activity that you're doing on your trip. These activities are available with select policies, and some have age restrictions and other conditions that apply, so check the PDS to see if you're eligible to add these activities to your policy and can meet the conditions.

Activities that you may be eligible to add to your policy include:

Cruising

Answer ‘Yes’ to Cruise for claims related to travel on a cruise ship if you are cruising within

  • Australian waters, the NZ or South Pacific regions for 1 night or more, or
  • Asia, Europe or Worldwide regions for 4 nights or more.

Always check the conditions and exclusion that apply under the policies, for example, there’s no cover for any medical expenses for medical treatment provided on land in Australia.

Adventure sports

We can cover a huge list of non-contact sports and activities like horse riding, snorkelling, indoor rock climbing and safari. But if you plan on more adventurous activities such as abseiling, quad biking, skydiving, or trekking above 3,000 metres, make sure you add the Adventure pack to your policy. This pack is only available for travellers up to the age of 74, and conditions do apply for specific activities, so you should refer to the PDS for further details on the applicable terms, conditions, and exclusions.

Snow Sports

Answer ‘Yes’ to Snow sports for cover if you’re going to be skiing, snowboarding, or working at a ski resort.

It’s important to be aware of the terms, conditions and exclusions that apply under the policy, for example, this cover is available for travellers up to the age of 69 only, and some snow sports require participation with a licensed snow sports instructor.

Riding a motorcycle, moped or scooter

Add the Motorcycle pack to your policy for cover just in case you’re in an accident when riding or being a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter.

Make sure you review the PDS for the licensing requirements that apply, and information on the other terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.

Driving a rental car

If you’re planning on hiring a car or campervan, you can purchase cover for the rental vehicle insurance excess on your rental vehicle insurance with your car hire company. Note that this cover doesnt take the place of rental vehicle insurance, and only provides cover for the excess component that you are liable to pay in the event of collision or theft of the rental vehicle.

For international policies, you can choose Rental Vehicle Excess Insurance of $5,000 or $8,000, and for domestic policies, Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess cover up to $5000 is included.

Keep in mind the exclusions that are outlined in the policy, for example, our definition of a ‘rental vehicle’ and the licensing requirements that apply.

Bike riding

You can purchase cover up to a maximum of $5000 for each bike, and up to a maximum of $15000 for all your bicycles combined, provided your bike is:

  • less than 3 years old,
  • valued at $1500 or more, and
  • is free of defects

Exclusions do apply and may affect you, so always check the PDS for the details.
