International Travel Insurance

The following information applies to policies purchased from 30th October 2023 onwards. For policies purchased prior to 30th October 2023: you can find the PDS relevant to you in your policy confirmation email, by logging into MyPolicy, or you can contact us for assistance.

Travel insurance when you are travelling internationally

International travel insurance should be considered no matter where you're headed or how tight your budget may be!

Every year thousands of travellers set off to explore new locations and cultures around the world.

Shopping in Singapore, island hopping in the Pacific, cruising to Alaska, hiking to Machu Picchu in Peru, or simply wandering the streets of Paris or Rome in search of the most authentic cuisine, overseas travel offers an unlimited variety of new experiences and adventures!

But even if you’ve thoroughly researched your destination, or only travel to what you consider to be ‘safe’ countries, you can never be absolutely certain that something won't go wrong along the way.

An international travel insurance policy can provide cover for a wide variety of situations. You may get sick or injured in an accident, or have your bag lost by the airline. You may even find yourself stranded due to a natural disaster, or have to unexpectedly return home early because of a family emergency.

Why should you get international travel insurance?

Whether you're travelling internationally to visit family, taking a break from work or study, or simply want to see the world, you should consider purchasing international travel insurance before you set off.

Not only does it provide you with access to 24 hour Emergency Assistance, but it can also help to cover unexpected expenses in a wide variety of situations.

Some common complications of overseas travel include:

  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses
  • Unexpected trip cancellations
  • Unexpectedly having to return to Australia
  • Loss or theft of travel documents
  • Damage or theft of personal items such as luggage, mobile phones, cameras, laptops, etc.
  • Travel delays

Many people don't realise until it's too late that they'll be the one who has to fork out for emergency medical treatment or other expenses if anything goes wrong on their travels.

The Australian government won't pay your bills, and Medicare and private health insurance generally doesn't cover you while you’re travelling internationally, so it will be up to you (or your family) to cover the costs if you run into trouble overseas. If you're in a country with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, you may have access to subsidised health care, but keep in mind that they won't cover the cost if you require emergency repatriation back to Australia if you're seriously sick or injured.

Who should get international travel insurance?

Any traveller heading overseas should consider purchasing international travel insurance before they depart.

This includes singles, couples, families, and friends, whether you're a:

  • Backpacker
  • Flashpacker
  • Senior
  • Business traveller
  • Volunteer
  • Student on exchange
  • Holidaymaker
  • Gap Year traveller
  • Adventurer
  • Cruiser
  • Frequent traveller

What are some of the main benefits to look for in an international travel insurance policy?

Every traveller has different priorities when they travel internationally, but some of the main benefits you might want to look for in a travel insurance policy include:

Worldwide 24-Hour Emergency Assistance
Cover for Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses
Cover for Cancellation Costs
Cover for Travel Delays
Cover for Luggage & Personal Belongings

Remember that it's important to compare the different benefit limits and exclusions when shopping around for a travel insurance policy, not just the price.

How do I choose my travel destination?

Just enter the country or countries that you're planning on travelling to. And if you need to add other countries after you've bought your policy? Just contact us and we'll add it for you - depending on the country or countries you want to add, you may not need to pay an extra charge!

Example Incidents:

Missed Connections in Venice

Judith was on her way to Europe via a stopover in Dubai when a delayed flight meant she missed her prepaid train connection in Venice. Stranded until the following day, she called the Fast Cover Emergency Assistance team who helped to arrange accommodation nearby so she could catch the same train and get back on her journey. Her Comprehensive policy covered her additional accommodation and meal expenses as well as the taxi fares to and from the station.

Carl's Cancellation Costs

Carl and his wife had planned and pre-paid for a trip to attend a 100-year birthday celebration and family reunion, followed by a homeward cruise from Southampton. Unfortunately, a few months before their departure, an unexpected medical diagnosis meant they were forced to cancel their holiday. Thankfully they had purchased travel insurance well in advance and were completely covered for their cancellation costs and lost deposits. After submitting a claim online and providing all the required documentation, they received a payment of over $10,000 AUD within the week.

Trip Cut Short

John and his wife were on a round-the-world cruise from Sydney to New York, and had planned to spend four weeks in the USA afterwards. However, their plans were unexpectedly cut short when John broke his leg on cobblestones in Amsterdam. The on-board doctor fitted a surgical boot, but the couple decided to fly straight home for treatment after disembarking in New York. They were able to claim for their cancelled train journey to Washington, as well as the pre-paid accommodation, domestic flights within the USA and the return flights home.

Sandra's Sickness at Sea

70-year-old Sandra from Canberra could have been left with medical bills totalling more than $29,000 AUD if she hadn’t purchased travel insurance. Sandra was on a 60 day cruise in Asia with her husband Jacob when she picked up a severe respiratory infection and needed to be evacuated from the ship. Fast Cover's Emergency Assistance team helped coordinate her medical transport and treatment as well as organising accommodation for Jacob to stay nearby while she recovered in hospital. They also arranged alternative flights home under medical supervision with oxygen once Sandra was declared fit to fly.
