Can I get Cover for Existing Medical Conditions on my Seniors Travel Insurance Cover?

As a senior traveller, we understand that you may have some existing medical conditions. Following a medical screening, Fast Cover’s seniors travel insurance cover may be able to provide cover for many existing medical conditions affecting senior travellers in case the unexpected happens on your trip.

How Medical Screening Works

Senior travellers can complete a medical screening for:

  • Your existing medical conditions that you have or have had, during the period of 3 years prior to your policy issue date
  • Any changes to your health that occur after your policy issue date and before the date of departure for your trip
  • New medical conditions you develop after you buy your policy and before you leave for your trip

You should also be aware of the General Exclusions that apply to all benefits, please refer to the general and other exclusions in the PDS.

Below is some more information about applying for cover for medical conditions and existing medical conditions.

Disclosing Medical Conditions When You Apply for Cover

If you have a medical condition, we may be able to provide you with cover. you can complete a medical screening if you have or have had a medical condition within the last 3 years prior to your policy purchase date, or experience changes to your health including new medical conditions from the date you purchase your policy, up until the date of departure for your trip.

Following your medical screening, we will tell you if we are able to provide cover in relation to the conditions you disclose. If you would like the cover for the approved conditions to be added to your policy you will need to pay the additional premium we apply for the cover, by the time required. We will then list the conditions as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.

If we do not list any such conditions as covered, or you do not disclose any such conditions, there is no covered provided in relation to them.

After Purchase and Any Changes in Health

If any changes in health occur (as defined in our PDS) after your policy issue date and before the date of departure for your trip, you need to contact Fast Cover and undertake a further screening process to determine what premium adjustment may be required.

This is because we automatically exclude cover for:

  • any new medical conditions or pregnancy conditions that occur after your policy issue date and before the date of departure for your trip, and
  • all conditions we have listed as covered on the Certificate of Insurance where changes in health have occurred after your policy issue date and before the date of departure for your trip (other than for a claim under Trip Cancellation Expenses, relating to the cancellation or rescheduling of your trip between the time of your policy issue date and the date of departure for your trip).

Based on the rescreening we may:

  • agree to provide cover for the existing listed conditions and/or add the new listed conditions as covered. You may choose to accept this cover or not. If you do not, you will not be covered in relation to the conditions not listed as covered, or
  • not agree to provide cover, where based on the changes, our underwriting rules require us to do so.

On being advised of the changes, we will adjust the premium payable (up or down) to reflect the premium that is payable by reason of the changes in accordance with our underwriting rules.

What We Need From You to Complete a Medical Screening

You will need reasonable knowledge of all of your medical conditions, pregnancy conditions or changes in health, which include but are not limited to, the names of your medical conditions or pregnancy conditions.

Check with your medical practitioner if you are unsure of the name because you will not be able to complete the medical screening if you only know the medication you are taking or the treatment you are receiving.

As some medical conditions may be interconnected, you must declare all of your medical conditions, pregnancy conditions or changes in health, regardless of whether or not you:

  • want cover for them, or
  • consider them treated, dormant or under control, or
  • do not consider them important or related to any of your other conditions.

If you do not declare all of your medical conditions or pregnancy conditions, you may not have cover for your medical conditions or pregnancy conditions that are listed as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.

In all of the above cases, if you are not happy with our decision you may exercise your cooling off rights where applicable or cancel the policy before the date of departure for your trip and obtain a refund in accordance with the policy terms. Please refer to our Product Disclosure Statementfor eligibility criteria, policy terms and conditions, benefit limits and sub-limits and any exclusions that apply.

How to Apply for Cover for Existing Medical Conditions

If you’re a senior traveller with any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them during your seniors trip. Our simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone with our Aussie based team to help you find out if your condition can be covered.

Select Who Needs Cover

Once you've added all travellers, to your policy, you can select those who wish to add cover for any existing medical conditions.

Take a Medical Screening

Answer a few questions online or over the phone about your health history. This helps us determine if your condition can be covered.

Choose to Add Cover

We'll let you know if we can provide cover for any existing medical conditions. You can then choose to add it to your policy.

To find out more about our medical screening process, and how the policy will apply in relation to an existing medical condition, please read and consider the PDS for eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that apply.

Does Travel Insurance for Seniors Cover My Hospital Expenses if I Get Sick Overseas?

Regardless of the international travel insurance policy that you choose for your seniors trip overseas, one important benefit we include with all our international policies is the Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit. Here’s some important information you need to know about overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses for senior travellers.

Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses

This benefit provides senior travellers with reimbursement for unexpected medical emergencies that can happen on your seniors trip overseas, from food poisoning to treatment for a broken bone or emergency surgery for appendicitis depending on your circumstances.

You should be aware that cover isn’t available for all medical expenses as it depends on the terms and conditions of your policy and some of these include (but are not limited to):

  • medical emergencies related to your existing medical conditions which aren’t listed as covered on your certificate of insurance,
  • planned medical procedures or other non-emergency medical treatments,
  • routine medical or dental check-ups,
  • injuries sustained from your participation in sport or leisure activities covered under the Adventure Pack or snow sports unless you’ve purchased additional cover for them, and
  • your medical expenses once you’ve returned to Australia,

so, it’s important to review your policy and PDS to understand what is and isn't covered while you're overseas and the terms and conditions that apply.

Reciprocal Health Care Agreements

Some countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia which may provide cover for some medical costs during your seniors trip if you meet the eligibility requirements. Please check with the relevant information sources for more information. In these cases, Fast Cover’s travel insurance may not pay for the cost of medical care that is covered by the RHCA. However, a RHCA may not cover every type of medical expense, so considering taking out travel insurance for international trips with cover for unexpected overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses may potentially save you thousands of dollars when cover is not available  under a RHCA.

If you’re travelling to an overseas destination that doesn’t have a RHCA with Australia, you may likely be responsible for all your medical expenses if you unexpectedly fall sick or are injured while travelling there. Having cover for these unexpected medical situations during your travels may potentially save you from costly out-of-pocket expenses. Please remember to do your own research regarding this to make an informed decision based on your personal and financial circumstances.

Existing Medical Conditions and Changes in Health

Remember, if further changes in health occur before the date of departure for your trip, you may need to undertake our medical screening process more than once as the changes in health exclusion would automatically apply again from the time any further changes in health occur

Find out more about what we consider to be a medical condition in our page on travel insurance for existing medical conditions.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy and PDS, T&Cs  and Certificate of Insurance. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, personal and financial situation or needs. Consider the PDS as eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits apply.

Medical Cover for Seniors in Australia

Domestic Plus Policy

At Fast Cover, our Domestic Plus policy provides travel insurance for seniors who plan to travel within Australia provided your destination is at least 200 km from your home in Australia.

Fast Cover is unable to provide cover for medical emergencies and medical expenses incurred within Australia because medical expenses are covered by Medicare and/or your private health insurance. However, our Domestic Plus policy can provide cover for Trip Cancellation Expenses due to a medical situation or condition that is covered under your policy and listed on your Certificate of Insurance. ^

Read our examples to see how our Domestic Plus travel insurance policy may be able to provide senior travellers with cover in circumstances covered under their policy. Please note our examples are purely fictional and are for illustrative purposes only. As each individual’s circumstances are different, our Claims team will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and conditions, and Certificate of Insurance.

Domestic Trip Cancellation Due to an Unexpected Injury

Example: A 70-year-old senior traveller bought a Domestic Plus policy to cover herself and her husband on a couple’s holiday to visit their grandchildren in the Gold Coast during the September school holidays with activities including theme parks, going to the beach and hiking. Two days before the couple was due to depart on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast, the wife fell and broke her leg, requiring surgery, and resulting in the need to cancel the couple’s holiday.

No Cover: Fast Cover is unable to provide cover for medical emergencies and medical expenses incurred within Australia because medical expenses are covered by Medicare and/or your private health insurance. In this instance, the costs of the surgery would likely be covered by Medicare and possibly their private health insurance policy, but not their domestic travel insurance policy.

Claims Assessment: However, under the Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit of the Domestic Plus policy, the wife can submit a claim for the cost of the flights, hotel or theme park tickets that cannot be refunded or credited for the claims team to assess further under the policy terms and conditions as the trip was cancelled due to an unexpected injury.

Please Note: This example is purely fictional and is for illustrative purposes only. As each individual's circumstances are different, our Claims team will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances,  policy terms and conditions, and Certificate of Insurance.

Domestic Trip Cancellation Due to a Covered Existing Medical Condition

Example: A 70-year-old senior traveller bought a Domestic Plus policy to cover herself and her husband on a couple’s holiday to visit their grandchildren in the Gold Coast during the September school holidays with activities including theme parks, going to the beach and hiking. She completed a medical screening and applied to include cover for her existing medical condition. Fast Cover was able to include cover for her existing medical condition, and it was listed as ‘Covered’ on her Certificate of Insurance. Two days before the couple was due to depart on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast, the wife experienced a medical situation as a result of her covered existing medical condition, resulting in the need to cancel the couple’s holiday.

Claims Assessment: However, under the Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit of the Domestic Plus policy, the wife can submit a claim for the cost of the flights, hotel or theme park tickets that cannot be refunded or credited for the claims team to assess further under the policy terms and conditions as the trip was cancelled due to a covered existing medical condition.

Please Note: This example is purely fictional and is for illustrative purposes only. As each  individual's circumstances are different, our Claims team will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and conditions, and Certificate of Insurance.

Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider the PDS as eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply.

Do Seniors Need Travel Insurance?

Whether you plan to go travel in Australia, explore overseas, go on a cruise or participate in adventure activities, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control could change your travel plans and leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. Seniors travel insurance cover can help better prepare you to deal with unexpected and unforeseen situations that could impact your seniorsholiday should the unexpected happen.

Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for seniors and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations on your next trip:

Non-Refundable Expenses from Cancelling Your Trip

Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your seniors trip. Rescheduling a cancelled holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your travel insurance cover can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.

Cancellation Cover for Existing Medical Conditions

If you need to cancel your seniors holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left with out-of-pocket expenses for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your travel insurance cover can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.

Extra Expenses Due to Travel Delays

Bad weather and airline operational issues could cause delays and mean you might have to spend extra money on food and accommodation while you wait for a new flight to get to your destination. Consider if your travel insurance cover can provide cover for travel delay expenses such as additional meals and accommodation.

Getting to Special Events on Time

Got tickets for your cruise, a tour package or booked flights for a wedding? If your scheduled transport is cancelled or delayed, consider if your travel  insurance cover may cover you for reasonable additional travel expenses to help you to get to your special event on time, so you don’t miss the moments that matter.

Each insurer may have a different definition of special events. At Fast Cover, special events include a pre-booked, pre-paid and pre-arranged:

  • Wedding
  • Funeral
  • Conference
  • Concert
  • Sporting event
  • Cruise
  • Tour package

These are only some of the situations that you might wish to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance.

Before you decide whether you need travel insurance cover for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what our policies will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is the Best Travel Insurance for Seniors?

The best travel insurance for seniors can be considered as a policy that provides cover for the type of seniors trip that you’re taking. When looking for the best travel insurance for seniors it’s important to choose a policy that aligns with your specific travel needs. This might include the activities you plan to do, who you will be travelling with and other considerations and situations that apply to you and your trip.

Here are some examples of things you may wish to consider when reviewing the best travel insurance for seniors that may also help you compare travel insurance policies to help you decide which policy is right for you:

Consider How You Will Get Around

Will you be renting a vehicle during your trip?

You may wish to check whether the travel insurance cover provides cover for the rental vehicle excess component of the rental vehicle insurance with your car hire company overseas in case your rental vehicle is in an accident, damaged or stolen during your trip.

Will you be riding or be a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter while overseas?

You may wish to check whether the policy provides cover for injuries resulting from those activities, and what conditions (such as licensing requirements or helmet use) may apply. Cover for riding or being a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter overseas may require an additional premium and may have age limits and other conditions of cover.

Consider the Activities You Will Be Doing

Are you planning to do any adventurous activities while on your trip?

You may wish to check whether the travel insurance cover provides cover for the types of adventure activities you plan to do in your destination. Cover for adventure activities may require an additional premium and may have age limits and other conditions of cover.

Consider Trip Cancellation Expenses

Have you booked a tour, accommodation or flights?

You may wish to consider whether the travel insurance cover includes cancellation cover in case you can’t travel due to an unforeseen circumstance such as an unexpected illness or injury.

Consider Who You Will Be Travelling With

Are you planning a solo adventure, a family trip or perhaps a relaxing getaway to enjoy your anniversary or retirement?

You may wish to check whether the travel insurance cover provides cover for singles, couples and families or groups. Consider how the policy benefits and benefit limits apply to all travellers listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

These are just some of the considerations that you might wish to consider when reviewing the best travel insurance for seniors, so you know what cover is available to you before and during your trip and under what conditions.

Before you decide on the best travel insurance for seniors for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

The Benefits of Travel Insurance Cover for Seniors

Depending on the level of cover you take out with your travel insurance policy, Fast Cover can provide you with different benefits to suit your travel plans, helping you to better prepare for and deal with unexpected medical and financial circumstances. Compare our travel insurance policies for seniors below.

The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

What is Not Covered by our Travel Insurance for Seniors?

It’s important to know not just what travel insurance for seniors covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Below are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

If you become injured while breaking the law

If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, this may include riding a motorcycle without the required helmet, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Remember that possession of certain drugs is illegal and different countries have different laws. Using drugs or selling them can land you in trouble with the law overseas.

If you are intoxicated or have taken illicit drugs or prohibited substance

Whilst it may not be illegal to have a drink overseas, alcohol consumption laws vary from country to country, and between regions within some countries. Make sure to research your travel destinations and follow the local laws. Keep in mind that alcohol consumption in certain situations might result in certain exclusions being likely applied to your travel insurance policy. As an example, if you’re under the influence of alcohol and you stumble and hurt yourself, you may not have cover under your policy.

Certain drugs are illegal in some countries, and you may not be covered by your international travel insurance policy when you’ve consumed drugs or been involved in drug related activities.

If you do an activity that isn’t covered by your policy

If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, riding a motorcycle, and you didn’t add the Motorcycle Pack to your international travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.

It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas. Cover for some activities may require an additional premium and may have age limits and other conditions of cover.

Unsupervised belongings

If your belongings are stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to claim for the stolen item. For example: If you leave your bag with your wallet and passport inside it on the deck chairs while you take a swim in the cruise pool, this may be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered.

You must take care to reasonably protect and secure your luggage and personal effects at all times. Make sure that you have your belongings with you or keep them locked up in your cabin.

Regular medical or dental check-ups

There are exclusions that may apply for regular or routine check-ups or filling regular prescriptions as they are not considered medical emergencies. Your claim might be denied if it arises from or involves the cost of medication in use at the time the trip began or the cost for maintaining a course of treatment you were on prior to the trip.

Ignoring official warnings

Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory of Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) warning on the official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.

Known events

Known events can be considered as serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.

If you buy your international travel insurance after an event is known, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.

Disappointing holidays

Perhaps the weather wasn’t ideal, you didn’t enjoy your tour, or the accommodation didn’t live up to the pictures online. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your seniors holiday has shaped up, your travel insurance cover is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time there.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

FAQs about Travel Insurance for Seniors

An age limit is the maximum age that you can be, to be eligible for a policy or cover type. If your age is over the applicable age limit for a policy or cover type, you are not eligible to purchase the policy or include cover for some activities.

All age-related limits are based on your age as at the date you purchase your policy, so you must enter the age that you are, when you purchase your policy. This means that if you are a year older by the time that you depart for your trip, or even during your trip, your policy will still be valid.

For example: If you are aged 60 at the time you buy your policy, but will be aged 61 when you actually travel, you should you enter your age as 60, as that is the age that you are at the time that we issue your policy.

Fast Cover provides travel insurance cover for travellers up to the age of 89. Even if you'll be 90 years of age when you travel, you may still be eligible for cover if you purchased your policy while you're still 89!

Unfortunately, we're not able to offer travel insurance to travellers aged 90 and over (unless they were 89 at the time the policy was purchased).

If you are aged 90 and over at the time of policy purchase, the Insurance Council of Australia may be able to suggest other companies who may be able to provide you with cover for your travel.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

If you are between 80-89 years of age at the time of policy purchase, you can purchase a:

  • Comprehensive,
  • Standard Saver,
  • Basics,
  • Domestic Plus Policy.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

We can offer travel insurance to travellers who were aged 89 at the time the policy was purchased, but will be 90 years of age at the time of travel. We're not able to offer travel insurance to travellers aged 90 and over at the time of policy purchase.

Enter the age that you will be at the time that you BUY your policy, even if you will be older when you are actually travelling.

You should use the age that you are at the time you buy your travel insurance policy. So, if you haven't had your 65th birthday yet, you should put your age as 64.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

Grandkids can be covered under a Family or Single policy if they are your own grandchildren (including grandchildren for whom you are the legal guardian) provided they are aged 20 and younger and not in full time employment. Your grandchildren must travel with you or the other adult listed on the certificate of insurance for 100% of the adult traveller’s itinerary.

Other children travelling with you and without their parents or grandparents cannot be covered under your family policy, they will need to take out their own policy, or have their parent or guardian take out a policy to cover them.^

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

If cancellation cover is included with your policy, and you're unable to go on your trip as a direct result of circumstances neither reasonably expected nor intended by you prior to the issue of your certificate of insurance, you can put in a claim for the payments that you've already made for your trip, including flights, tours, cruises and accommodation.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, in the event of a claim, our claims team will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

We may be able to provide cover for cancellation if your travelling companion is aged 84 and younger, provided the claim meets the terms and conditions of the policy. However, there is a general exclusion that applies to policies that excludes claims that arise from or is any way related to the death, terminal diagnosis, sickness, injury or hospitalisation of any person aged 85 years and over at the time of the claimable event (other than you), regardless of the country in which they live.

If you’re aged 75 and younger, and taking several trips within a 12-month period, you can apply for a Frequent Traveller Saver policy to include cover for those trips.  You can choose from 15, 25, 40 or 63 days for each trip.^

If you’re over the age of 75, and planning a few upcoming trips, contact us on 1300 409 322 and we can put together competitive Single trip quotes for you.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

No one wants to pay more than they need to for travel insurance, especially if you're on the pension or just want to keep your travel costs down. However, when you're comparing travel insurance for your seniors trip, the cheapest quote for seniors travel insurance cover may not be the most suitable policy for your trip, as it may not provide the cover that you want!

You should consider what you want to be covered for and what the travel insurance for seniors covers and what it doesn't cover. A policy that doesn't cover you for the things you want may end up not being the cheapest if you have to make a claim.

Any advice is general advice only and has not taken into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs. Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.
