Off-piste means any area away from prepared ski runs that Is outside of resort boundaries and is where skiing or snowboarding is allowed.

Off-piste areas are often more adventurous, with powder snow, trees, and natural obstacles. They can be great fun, but they also generally carry higher risks compared to sticking to the main runs.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

If you will not be participating in any snow sports, for example, not participating in snowshoeing or any other snow sports activity, you do not need to purchase a Snow Sports Plus policy.

Under our PDS snowshoeing is listed as a snow sport. Does Travel Insurance Cover My Hospital Expenses If I Get Injured During Snow Sports Overseas?

Fast Cover’s Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit may provide cover for the emergency medical and hospital expenses you incur overseas from participating in snow sports listed in our PDS if you choose to add cover for snow sports and take out the Snow Sports Plus policy. Here’s some important information you need to know about overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses relating to snow sports.

Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses for Snow Sports

This benefit provides reimbursement for unexpected medical emergencies that can happen on your overseas trip, from treatment for a broken bone to emergency surgery, depending on your circumstances. This benefit may provide some cover for overseas medical and hospital expenses for injuries sustained from your participation in covered snow sports if you have purchased additional cover for them and have taken out the Snow Sports Plus policy.

You should be aware that cover isn’t available for all medical expenses as it depends on the terms and conditions and exclusions of your policy, including conditions for snow sports. That’s why it’s important to review your policy and PDS to understand what is and isn't covered while you're overseas and the terms and conditions that apply.

Reciprocal Health Care Agreements

Some countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia which may provide cover for some medical costs during your stay if you meet the eligibility requirements. Please check with the relevant information sources for more information. In these cases, Fast Cover’s travel insurance policy may not pay for the cost of medical care that is covered by the RHCA. However, Reciprocal Health Care Agreements may not cover every type of medical expense, so considering taking out snow sports travel insurance with cover for unexpected overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses may potentially save you thousands of dollars when cover is not available under a RHCA.

If you’re travelling to an overseas destination that doesn’t have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, you may likely be responsible for all your medical expenses if you unexpectedly fall sick or are injured while participating in snow sports. Having cover for these unexpected medical situations during your winter travels may potentially save you thousands of dollars. Please remember to do your own research regarding this to make an informed decision based on your personal and financial circumstances.

Existing Medical Conditions and Changes in Health

You can apply for cover for your existing medical conditions and any changes in health and/or new medical conditions you may develop before you leave for your snow trip through a medical screening.

Find out more about what we consider to be a medical condition and how you can apply for cover in our page on travel insurance for existing medical conditions.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy and PDS, T&Cs and cover as specified on your Certificate of InsuranceAny advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, personal and financial situation or needs. Consider the PDS as eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits apply.

Cover for Existing Medical Conditions

If you have any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them during your trip overseas. Our simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone to help you find out if your condition can be covered.

Select Who Needs Cover

Once you've added all travellers, to your policy, you can select those who wish to add cover for any existing medical conditions.

Take a Medical Screening

Answer a few questions online or over the phone about your health history. This helps us determine if your condition can be covered.

Choose to Add Cover

We'll let you know if we can provide cover for any existing medical conditions. You can then choose to add it to your policy.

To find out more about our medical screening process, and how the policy will apply in relation to an existing medical condition, please read and consider the PDS for eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that apply.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Skiing or Snowboarding?

Whether you plan to ski, snowboard or participate in other snow sports in Australia or overseas, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control could change your travel plans and leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. Snow sports travel insurance can help better prepare you to deal with unexpected and unforeseen situations that could impact your travel plans to the snow should the unexpected happen.

Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for skiing or snowboarding and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations on your next trip to the snow:

Injuries and Medical Cover Related to Snow Sports

Even if you're an experienced skier, a fellow thrill-seeker may make an unexpected move, you might mogul the wrong way or come off second best with an obstacle on the ski slopes. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for unexpected injuries or medical situations including emergency medical and hospital expenses, and emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if you become unexpectedly injured while participating in covered snow sports overseas.

It is important to note that travel insurers in Australia may not be able to provide cover for medical expenses incurred in Australia as these expenses are generally covered by Medicare and/or your Private Health Insurance.

Cover for Lift Passes, Snow Sports Equipment or Lessons

If you become injured or sick during your trip you may have to sit out on snow sports activities you’ve already pre-booked and pre-paid, leaving you with out-of-pocket snow sports expenses. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide some cover for pre-booked and pre-paid snow sports expenses such as your lift passes, snow sports equipment hire or lessons.

Cover for Snow Resort Closure

Perfect snow conditions aren’t guaranteed on your trip to the snow. Poor snow conditions, bad weather or a power failure could unexpectedly shut down lifts or lead to snow resort closure. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide some cover to help reimburse you for the cost of transport to the nearest open resort or for the cost of lift passes at an alternative snow resort.

Non-Refundable Expenses from Cancelling Your Trip

Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your trip to the snow. Rescheduling a cancelled ski holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable flights and snow resort accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.

Cancellation Cover for Existing Medical Conditions

If you need to cancel your snow holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left out-of-pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.

Extra Expenses Due to Travel Delays

Bad weather and airline operational issues could cause delays and mean you might have to spend extra money on food and accommodation while you wait for a new flight to get to your destination or snow resort. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for travel delay expenses such as additional meals and accommodation.

These are only some of the situations that you might wish to consider when deciding if you need snow sports travel insurance.

Before you decide whether you need snow sports travel insurance for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what our snow sports cover will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is the Best Ski and Snow Sports Travel Insurance?

The best travel insurance for snow sports can be considered as a policy that provides cover for the type of trip that you’re taking. When looking for the best travel insurance for snow sports, whether you’re skiing or snowboarding, it’s important to choose a policy that aligns with your specific travel needs. This might include the snow sports and activities you plan to do, the snow sports equipment you will be travelling with, who you are travelling with and other considerations and situations that apply to you and your trip.

Here are some examples of things you may wish to consider when reviewing the best travel insurance for snow sports that may also help you compare travel insurance policies to help you decide which policy is right for you:

Consider the Snow Sports You Will Be Doing

Will you be skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, tobogganing, cat skiing or heli-skiing during your trip to the snow?

You may wish to consider whether the snow sports travel insurance policy provides cover for the snow sports you want to do during your trip and any conditions that may apply. Keep in mind that cover for some snow sports may require a professional snow sport instructor and may have age limits and other conditions of cover.

Consider Your Snow Sports Equipment

Will you be travelling with your own snow sports equipment like skis, snowboards or poles and worried they might be lost, stolen or damaged during your trip to the snow?

You likely might need snow sports equipment to participate in many snow sports, so you may wish to consider whether the policy includes cover for your snow sports equipment or snow equipment replacement hire.

Consider How You Will Get Around the Snow

Will you be renting a vehicle during your trip to the snow?

You may wish to check whether the snow sports travel insurance policy provides cover for the rental vehicle excess component of the rental vehicle insurance with your car hire company overseas in case your rental vehicle is in an accident, damaged or stolen during your trip abroad.

Will you be riding or be a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter while overseas?

You may wish to check whether the policy provides cover for injuries resulting from those activities, and what conditions (such as licensing requirements or helmet use) may apply.

Consider the Activities You Will Be Doing

Are you planning to do any adventurous activities while visiting the snow apart from snow sports?

You may wish to check whether the snow sports policy provides cover for the types of adventure activities you plan to do in your destination. Cover for adventure activities may require an additional premium and may have age limits and other conditions of cover.

Consider Trip Cancellation Expenses

Have you booked a tour, accommodation at your snow resort or flights?

You may wish to consider whether the snow sports travel insurance policy includes cancellation cover in case you can’t travel due to an unforeseen circumstance such as an unexpected illness or injury.

Consider Who You Will Be Travelling With to the Snow

Are you planning a solo adventure, a family trip to the snow during the school holidays, or perhaps a romantic winter getaway with snow sports included?

You may wish to check whether the snow sports travel insurance policy provides cover for singles, couples and families or groups. Consider how the policy benefits and benefit limits apply to all travellers listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

These are just some of the considerations that you might wish to consider when reviewing the best snow sports travel insurance, so you know what cover is available to you before and during your trip to the snow and under what conditions.

Before you decide on the best snow sports travel insurance for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

What is Not Covered in our Snow Sports Travel Insurance?

It’s important to know not just what your snow sports travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Below are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

If you become injured while breaking the law

If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, this may include riding a motorcycle without the required helmet, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Remember that possession of certain drugs is illegal and different countries have different laws. Using drugs or selling them can land you in trouble with the law overseas.

If you are intoxicated or have taken illicit drugs or prohibited substances

Whilst it may not be illegal to have a drink overseas, alcohol consumption laws vary from country to country, and between regions within some countries. Make sure to research your travel destinations and follow the local laws. Keep in mind that alcohol consumption in certain situations might result in certain exclusions being likely applied to your travel insurance policy. As an example, if you’re under the influence of alcohol and you stumble and hurt yourself, you may not have cover under your policy.

Certain drugs are illegal in some countries, and you may not be covered by your international travel insurance policy when you’ve consumed drugs or been involved in drug related activities.

If you do an activity that isn’t covered by your policy

If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, participating in recreational skiing or snowboarding, and you didn’t add snow sports cover your international travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.

Similarly, if you participate in a snow sports activity that requires a professional snow sports instructor, without a professional snow sports instructor, you may not be covered under your policy.

It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas and within Australia.

Unsupervised belongings

If your belongings are stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to claim for the stolen item. For example: If you leave your bag with your wallet and passport inside it at the ski resort cafe while you go skiing, this may be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered.

Make sure you keep your belongings with you at all times or keep them in a secure location or take reasonable measures to secure them at all times and at all places.

Regular medical or dental check-ups

There are exclusions that may apply for regular or routine check-ups or filling regular prescriptions as they are not considered medical emergencies. Your claim might be denied if it arises from or involves the cost of medication in use at the time the trip began or the cost for maintaining a course of treatment you were on prior to the trip.

Ignoring official warnings

Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory of Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.

Known events

Known events can be considered as serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.

If you buy your international travel insurance after an event is known, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.

Disappointing holidays

Perhaps the snow was too cold your liking, you didn’t enjoy your ski lessons, or the ski resort accommodation didn’t live up to the pictures online. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your trip to the snow has shaped up, your snow and ski travel insurance is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time at the snow.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

Please note that policies purchased while you are already overseas are subject to a 48-hour waiting period for all benefits regardless of when you purchase your policy and a $500 excess for all claims. It is not currently possible to reduce this excess.

For more information on extending your cover or purchasing an Already Overseas policy, please read our PDS for eligibility, terms and conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions that may apply to you and your trip before deciding which policy is right for you and your individual needs.

No, there is no cover for overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if you do not have a Snow Sports Plus policy and you become injured whilst participating in any snow sports listed in our PDS.
