Philippines Entry and Visa Requirements: Do Australians Need a Visa for the Philippines?

Planning a trip to the Philippines? For Australian citizens, the good news is that you can enjoy visa-free entry to the Philippines for short stays of up to 30 days. This makes the Philippines an accessible destination for Australian tourists and short-term business travellers. For stays exceeding 30 days or for purposes other than tourism or short business trips, you'll need to apply for the appropriate visa type. Knowing these travel requirements for the Philippines will help you plan your trip.

Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation, or needs. As entry and visa requirements for the Philippines may change over time, it is your responsibility to verify entry and visa requirements with official government sources such as the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine Embassy or the Consulate General.

Entry Requirements for the Philippines

Australians travelling to the Philippines must register their travel with eTravel, the Philippines Travel Information System, within 72 hours (or 3 days) prior to their arrival into the country. This electronic system replaces the old e-Arrival Card that was previously filled out on the One Health Pass website.

The eTravel registration does not replace visa requirements, so you will still need to obtain the relevant visa for your trip. Although Australians are eligible for visa-free travel to the Philippines of up to 30-days, they must still register their travel details on the eTravel portal to receive a QR code for arrival and departure formalities.

Requirements for the Philippines eTravel Registration

To register your travel on the Philippines eTravel portal, you will need to have the following details and documents on hand:

  • Email address: You will need to create an account with the eTravel system

  • Itinerary: You will need to provide your flight details including the arrival date and flight number

The Philippines's Visa Exemption Scheme

The Philippines offers a visa-free entry scheme to citizens of 157 countries, including Australia. Under this scheme, Australian citizens can enter the Philippines without a visa for up to 30 days, provided they have:

  1. A passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay
  2. A confirmed return or onward ticket
  3. Sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  4. No record of exclusion from the Philippines
  5. Must comply with entry requirements for arriving foreign nationals as stated by the Philippines Bureau of Immigration
  6. Have filled out the Health Declaration Form

Travellers who intend to stay beyond 30 days are required to apply for an Extension with the Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines or apply for an appropriate visa prior to travel.

Can I Get a Visa on Arrival in the Philippines?

The Philippines does not offer a standard visa-on-arrival program for Australian travellers or tourists. The Bureau of Immigration provides a Special Visa Upon Arrival (SEVUA) program for specific categories of eligible travellers including:

  • foreign investors and businessmen endorsed by various committees or government bodies
  • foreigners participating in international events such as athletes
  • foreigners that are part of government-endorsed investment projects

Australian citizens generally don't need to use this service since they already qualify for visa-free entry for up to 30 days. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, it's recommended to apply for the appropriate visa before arrival.

Philippines Work Visa / Pre-Arranged Employment Visa

The Philippines pre-arranged employment visa (9g) allows Australian citizens to engage in gainful employment in the Philippines in both commercial and non-commercial categories. This visa allows you to legally work in the Philippines for the duration specified in your employment contract, typically up to one year with the possibility of extension.

Visa Requirements for the Philippines Work Visa / Pre-Arranged Employment Visa

The application process is more complex than tourist or business visas, requiring coordination between you and your Philippine employer, who must sponsor your visa application. The pre-approved employment visa application process typically takes 2-3 months so it’s important to do this in advance of your employment start date.

A key requisite for this visa is the Alien Employment Permit (AEP), issued by the Department of Labor and Employment which takes around 2-3 weeks alone to process. However, if the applicant is required to start working immediately while the visa is being processed, a Provisional Work Permit is an alternative that authorises foreigners to start working while the AEP and visa are being processed.

General visa requirements for the Philippines pre-arranged employment visa include:

  • Completed visa application form
  • Valid passport with at least six months validity
  • Photocopy of employment contract or equivalent document with details of exact compensation, duration of employment and comprehensive description of the nature and scope of the applicant’s position in the company
  • Letter of invitation from your Philippine employer
  • Employer’s registration certificates
  • Photocopy of the petitioner’s latest Income Tax Return with the corresponding proof of payment
  • Photocopy of Alien Employment Permit (AEP), issued by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and an actual publication of the applicant’s approved AEP
  • Alien Certification of Registration Identity Card (ACR I-Card) visa application
  • Tax Identification Number application with the Bureau of Internal Revenue
  • Medical clearance
  • Police clearance from Australia
  • Visa fee payment

For a detailed checklist of documentary requirements for the pre-approved employment visas visit the Bureau of Immigration website.

Philippines Student Visa

The Philippines Student Visa (9f) allows Australian citizens, at least 18 years of age, to take up a course of study at a University, seminary or college in the Philippines. This visa is required for academic courses lasting longer than 30 days. The Student Visa is typically valid for the duration of your course, with possible extensions.

Australian students wishing to take up a short-term non-degree course should apply for a temporary visitor’s visa. Upon arrival in the Philippines and acceptance by the eligible school or educational institution, students must apply for a Special Study Permit at the Bureau of Immigration’s Student Desk. This permit allows you to study a short-term course while on a temporary visitors visa.
