Family Travel Insurance for Australian Families

Travelling with kids or dependants? Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance makes it easy to cover everyone on one trip under a single policy. Get cover for medical emergencies, cancellations, luggage and more. ^

Family Holiday Insurance: One Policy for the Whole Family

Whether you’re planning a family holiday overseas, a snow trip, or a domestic road trip, Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance is built for Australian families who love to travel together. Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance helps make things simpler by covering everyone travelling together on the same trip under one policy. ^

Whether you’re travelling with children, dependants or grandparents, this policy is designed for families heading off together. Here are some of the key reasons travellers choose our Family travel insurance:

  • Flexible policy options: Choose from Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Basics, Snow Sports Plus, or Domestic Plus plans to match your destination and trip type
  • Cover for dependants and grandchildren: Add up to 10 eligible dependants or grandchildren travelling with you to one Family policy ^
  • Cover for common family mishaps: Cover for medical emergencies, cancellations, lost luggage, travel delays, and rental vehicle excess ^
  • Optional extras to suit your family trip: Customise your policy with add-ons like Cruise cover, the Adventure Pack or Motorcycle Pack ^

Every traveller’s needs are different, so check the PDS to find the right policy for you. Any advice is general advice only and doesn't consider your personal and financial circumstances.

What is Family Travel Insurance?

Family travel insurance is designed for family members travelling together on the same trip, whether that’s parents and kids or grandparents and grandkids. Instead of arranging separate policies for each traveller, a Family travel insurance policy brings families travelling in one itinerary under one policy, making it easier to organise and manage cover for your family holiday. This means a simpler process when buying cover, understanding benefits, and managing any claims later.

At Fast Cover, a Family travel insurance policy can provide cover for you and your spouse or de facto partner, and your dependants, or

  • You and your spouse or de facto partner, and your grandchildren, or
  • You, your son or daughter, and your grandchildren.

The main travellers and their spouse or partner or son and daughter must be travelling together for at least 75% of the trip itinerary. Dependant children must be travelling with at least one of the adults listed on the certificate of insurance for 100% of the person travelling’s itinerary. Dependant children may be the relevant adult’s children or grandchildren. ^

This structure means families travelling together, whether parents, kids or grandparents, can be included on the same policy, as long as they’re listed on the Certificate of Insurance and travelling on the same itinerary duration as specified in the PDS.

Always refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full eligibility details, limits, and conditions.

Under Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance policy, certain benefits are shared between the insured adults and their dependants. This means that when both adults are listed on the same policy, the total benefit available is pooled across the family. The benefit limits for Family policies are equal to double the single policy benefit limit (except for as listed below) and apply to the combined total of all claims made by the travellers (including dependants) listed on the Certificate of insurance.

For example, under the Special Event Transport benefit, each insured adult may be entitled to a limit of $5,000. When two adults are listed under the Family policy, up to $10,000 is available for the family in total, as outlined in the policy terms.

However, it’s important to understand that the benefit limit is not doubled for the following benefits and optional covers:

  • Benefit 13: Theft of Cash
  • Benefit 18: Personal Liability
  • Benefit 19: Rental Vehicle Excess
  • Benefit 23: Snow Resort Closure
  • Benefit 26: Bicycle Pack

Benefit amounts, limits, and sub-limits may vary depending on the type of travel insurance policy you choose, so it’s important to review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full details on how pooled benefits apply under your selected policy.

What Does Family Travel Insurance Cover

Travelling together as a family can be rewarding, but it also comes with its own set of unexpected situations. Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance offers a range of benefits designed to help your family prepare for unforeseen events that may arise during your trip, whether you are exploring overseas destinations or travelling within Australia.

This page provides only a summary of some of the benefits and options available at Fast Cover and does not replace the PDS which sets out the full terms and conditions of cover including benefit limits, sub-limits and exclusions that apply. Please note we can only provide cover for the circumstances and situations covered by your travel insurance policy and listed in your Certificate of Insurance so always review the PDS before deciding whether you need travel insurance and which policy is right for you.

Trip Cancellation Expenses

Cancelled family holidays can be both disappointing and expensive, especially when flights, accommodation, or tours have already been paid for the whole family.

If an insured family member becomes unexpectedly ill, injured, or experiences another event covered under your policy that results in the cancellation of your trip, Fast Cover’s Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit may reimburse the non-refundable costs you have already paid. ^

At Fast Cover, you can buy a Family travel insurance policy for your family holiday up to 12 months prior to your departure date, including before you've booked your flights, tours and any accommodation. Please note cancellation cover is only available with our Standard Saver, Comprehensive, Domestic Plus, Snow Sports Plus and Frequent Traveller Saver policies. ^

Overseas 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance

With Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance, all insured family members have access to our Australian-based Emergency Assistance team, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ^

Depending on your situation, Fast Cover’s Emergency Medical Assistance team may be able to assist during unexpected medical emergencies overseas by:

  • Locating and arranging overseas medical treatment or hospital admission
  • Coordinating approved medical evacuation or repatriation
  • Providing guidance on accessing local medical support services ^

Each insured family member listed on the policy can contact Emergency Assistance directly when urgent help is needed abroad.

Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses

Medical care overseas can be costly, and even a short hospital stay may result in significant expenses.

With Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance, you may be covered for overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if an insured family member becomes unexpectedly ill or injured while on the trip. ^

Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance is designed to help with the financial impact of unexpected illness or injury overseas. This may include necessary medical treatment, hospitalisation costs, or related medical expenses covered under your policy that are not reimbursed elsewhere. ^

Overseas Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Expenses

If an insured family member experiences a serious medical emergency while travelling, they may require medical transport or evacuation to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment, or repatriation back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision. ^

Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance provides cover for reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, as well as the cost of medical transfer, evacuation, or repatriation when these services are approved under your policy.

All medical evacuations and repatriations must be arranged and approved by Fast Cover before they take place. ^

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Luggage

When luggage or personal items belonging to any insured family member are lost, stolen, or damaged during a trip, it can cause inconvenience the whole family and leave you with out-of-pocket expenses

Our Family travel insurance may include cover for luggage and personal items such as laptops, cameras, and phones if they are lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged in situations covered under your policy. ^

Benefit limits and sub-limits apply to how much can be claimed for each item, and conditions apply to when and how cover is provided. For full details, it’s important to read the PDS to understand your entitlements and any exclusions that may apply. ^

Travel Delay Expenses

If your family’s pre-booked transport is cancelled and rescheduled or delayed due to an event covered under your policy, Fast Cover’s Travel Delay Expenses benefit may reimburse the reasonable cost of extra meals and accommodation. ^

This benefit may provide cover for the reimbursement of reasonable additional meals and accommodation expenses up to $200 for each adult (shared with dependants) for each 24-hour period if your scheduled transport is delayed for at least 6 hours from the planned departure time, due to circumstances outside your control. ^

Trip Disruptions Expenses

Even once your trip begins, unexpected events such as natural disasters or severe weather can disrupt your plans. If your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted due to covered events, Fast Cover’s Trip Disruption Expenses benefit may cover reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred during your trip. ^

This benefit applies to each insured family member listed under the policy, as long as expenses are unrecoverable from another source. The event must have started after your Certificate of Insurance was issued. ^

Optional Extras for Family Travel Insurance

Every family trip is different, and your Family travel insurance policy can be customised to match how and where your family travel. Whether you are planning a snow holiday, hiring a car for a road trip, or taking the family on a cruise, Fast Cover’s optional add-ons give you the flexibility to tailor your policy to your family holiday.

These optional extras can help you include cover for a range of activities and adventures that may not be automatically included in your policy. Depending on the policy type, the following optional add-ons may be available with your Family travel insurance:

Cover For Medical Conditions Under Family Travel Insurance

Having an existing medical condition doesn’t necessarily mean your family can’t get travel insurance. With Fast Cover, you may be able to obtain Family travel insurance that includes cover for an existing medical condition under the applicable policy benefits. Cover for existing medical conditions doesn’t just apply to one person, anyone listed on your policy, including dependants, can be covered for their existing medical conditions. ^

To find out if we can provide cover for an insured family member’s existing medical condition, you’ll need to complete a medical screening during your quote journey where you tell us about:

    • Any medical or pregnancy conditions you or any insured family member have, or have had, in the 3 years prior to your policy issue date, and
    • Any new medical or pregnancy conditions that develop, or changes to your health, after your policy issue date and before you depart on your trip. ^

It’s important that you declare all relevant medical or pregnancy conditions for each traveller when applying for a Family travel insurance quote. If a condition is approved through the medical screening process, it will be listed on your Certificate of Insurance and will then be included under your cover. Any relevant medical or pregnancy condition that is not declared or not listed on your Certificate of Insurance will not be covered. ^

Please note that if your family has chosen the Frequent Traveller Saver policy, existing medical conditions can only be added for the main traveller. Spouses and dependant children cannot add cover for their own medical conditions under this policy. If a spouse or dependant wishes to be covered for their existing medical condition, they will need to purchase their own separate policy. ^

If your health changes after purchasing your policy but before you travel, you will need to contact Fast Cover for a medical re-screening. This process may adjust your premium and will determine whether your condition can continue to be covered. ^

Please keep in mind that some existing medical conditions may require you to pay an additional cost for them to be included under your cover. You have the choice to either pay for this additional cost or not. If you choose to pay, the condition will be added to your policy and shown on your Certificate of Insurance. If you choose not to pay, that condition will not be covered.

How to Apply for Cover for Existing Medical Conditions

If you or your family members have any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them during your trip. Our simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone to help you find out if your medical condition or pregnancy condition can be covered under your Family travel insurance policy.

Select Who Needs Cover

Once you've added all travellers, to your policy, you can select those who wish to add cover for any existing medical conditions.

Take a Medical Screening

Answer a few questions online or over the phone about your health history. This helps us determine if your condition can be covered.

Choose to Add Cover

We'll let you know if we can provide cover for any existing medical conditions. You can then choose to add it to your policy.

To find out more about our medical screening process, and how the policy will apply in relation to an existing medical condition, please read and consider the PDS for eligibility criteria, terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that apply.

Do I Need Family Travel Insurance?

Travelling with kids can be one of the best ways to create lasting memories, whether it’s a family holiday overseas, a snow trip, or a road trip within Australia. But even with careful planning, unexpected situations can sometimes affect your travel plans.

Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance is designed to help you prepare for many of the things that can go wrong on a family holiday, from medical emergencies to cancellations, lost luggage, or travel delays. Here are some common situations to consider when deciding if you need family travel insurance, and how it may provide cover for certain events during your next family trip:

Travelling With Kids or Dependants

If your trip includes children or dependants, family travel insurance typically provides cover for the everyone under one policy, as long as they’re listed on the Certificate of Insurance and travelling on the same itinerary.

This can help simplify cover for the whole group with shared details and consistent benefits across the policy. However, it’s important to consider the terms and conditions of cover as each insurer may have different rules for families. You may wish to consider how long dependants must be travelling with an adult on the same itinerary to be eligible for cover under a family travel insurance policy.

Non-Refundable Expenses from Cancelling Your Family Trip

Family holidays often involve paying upfront for flights, accommodation, and tours for multiple travellers. If a parent or dependant becomes unexpectedly ill, injured, or experiences another covered event that forces you to cancel, you could lose the money you’ve already spent.

Consider if your family travel insurance provides trip cancellation cover to help reimburse non-refundable prepaid costs.

Getting Sick or Injured While Travelling

Many parents and grandparents consider family health and safety as the number one priority when travelling. If you or your kids or grandkids become unexpectedly ill or injured while overseas, medical expenses can be expensive.

Family travel insurance may help provide cover for unexpected overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses if any insured family member becomes sick or injured while travelling.

For example, Fast Cover’s international policies include the following medical benefits with unlimited benefit limits:

  • Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses
  • Overseas 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance
  • Overseas Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation

If Your Trip is Delayed or Disrupted

Family travel plans can sometimes be affected by unexpected events like severe weather, strikes, or natural disasters that cause flight delays or cancellations.

Family travel insurance may include cover for reasonable additional accommodation and meal expenses if your transport is delayed or disrupted by an event covered under your policy. Consider if your family travel insurance policy provides cover for these circumstances.

This can be particularly helpful when travelling with kids, as even short delays can lead to extra costs and changes to your itinerary.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Luggage and Personal Items

Travelling with kids often means packing more bags, prams, or electronics like tablets and phones, and losing any of them can cause inconvenience.

Consider if your family travel insurance includes Luggage and Personal Effects cover for the loss, theft, or accidental damage of your belongings.

These are only some of the situations you might wish to consider when deciding if you need family travel insurance. Before you decide whether you need family travel insurance for your next family holiday, you should read the PDS to check what the travel insurance will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you, and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation, or needs.

Where Is Your Next Family Destination?

Whether you’re heading to the Gold Coast theme parks, relaxing on Fiji’s beaches, skiing in New Zealand, or exploring Europe and the USA, our Family holiday insurance offers flexible cover for your family’s travel plans and budget.

What is the Best Family Travel Insurance?

When you’re planning a family holiday, finding the best family travel insurance isn’t just about price, it’s about understanding which policy gives your family the right level of protection for your trip. Families often look for flexibility, clear benefits, and cover that fits the way they travel.

The best family travel insurance for your family depends on your destination, activities, and what level of cover matters most to you. Here are a few key things to consider when comparing family travel insurance policies and deciding what might suit your family’s needs.

Consider the Level of Cover Your Family Needs

The best family holiday insurance should match your destination, trip type, and budget. When comparing family travel insurance options, consider levels of cover available and benefit limits available for your family.

Fast Cover offers several cover levels so you can choose the one that suits your family’s journey best, from essential medical-only cover to comprehensive cover with a wider range of benefits available to provide cover for a broader range of unexpected situations.

When comparing options, always read the PDS, check what’s included and what the benefit limits are for each policy. Understanding the scope of cover can help you find the best family travel insurance for your needs.

Consider Cover for Dependants

If you’re travelling with kids or dependants, it can be difficult to find one policy that covers everyone together. Some insurers may limit how many dependants can be included or require separate policies, which can make managing your trip and cover more complicated.

For example, with Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance, you can include up to 10 eligible dependants travelling on the same itinerary. ^

When comparing options, look for family travel insurance that allows all your dependants to be covered under one policy. This makes it easier to organise cover for the whole family with shared policy details, consistent benefits, and one Certificate of Insurance for your trip.

Consider Emergency Medical Assistance

When travelling with children, most parents and grandparents value and prioritise their health and safety above everything else. An unexpected illness or injury overseas can be overwhelming, especially in an unfamiliar country where medical care may work differently or require upfront payment.

When comparing policies, consider family travel insurance that provides 24/7 emergency medical assistance when travelling overseas. Choosing a policy that includes round-the-clock emergency medical assistance gives parents the reassurance of knowing that help is available if someone in the family, especially a child becomes sick or injured while travelling. ^

With Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance, you and your family have access to our Australian-based Emergency Assistance team any time of day or night if an unexpected medical emergency occurs overseas.

Consider Cover for Existing Medical Conditions

Many parents worry about travelling with children who have existing medical conditions, whether that’s asthma, allergies, eczema, or another ongoing health issue. Even a mild condition that’s easily managed at home can become more complicated overseas if an emergency happens, where medical care may work differently or where language barriers make it harder to explain what your child needs.

When comparing family travel insurance policies, consider if the policy lets you declare and apply for cover for existing medical conditions.

With Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance, you can complete a medical screening during your quote application to tell us about any existing or recent medical or pregnancy conditions for you, your partner, or your dependants.

Consider Your Travel Destinations and Regions

Not sure exactly where your family holiday will take you? When looking for the best family travel insurance policy, consider if your insurer allows you to select cover by region rather than listing every country individually.

Fast Cover offers five region options to choose from: Worldwide, Europe, Asia, South Pacific, and New Zealand. ^

Selecting a region can be especially helpful if your family is:

  • Travelling on a multi-country tour or cruise
  • Visiting relatives across different countries
  • Temporarily relocating overseas for work and planning to explore nearby destinations
  • Taking a longer family holiday with a flexible itinerary

Consider the Activities your Family Will Be Doing

Every family travels differently. Some families spend their holidays relaxing by the pool or sightseeing, while others enjoy more active adventures like skiing, hiking, or water sports.

The activities you plan to do on your trip can affect the type and level of cover your family needs. It is important to have the right options added, some activities might not be automatically included in your policy.

When comparing family travel insurance options, consider if the policy allows you to include optional cover for the activities your family enjoys such as adventure activities which may require an additional premium and have different age limits

With Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance, you can customise your policy with add-ons such as the Motorcycle Pack, Adventure Pack or upgrade your policy to a Snow Sports Plus policy to have cover for overseas snow sports, for an additional premium. ^

Consider the Risk of Natural Disasters or Unexpected Events

Even the best-planned family holiday can change suddenly. Natural disasters such as floods, bushfires, cyclones, or volcanic eruptions can disrupt flights and travel routes with little warning. Families may find themselves needing extra accommodation, arranging new flights, or managing travel delays, all while travelling with kids who rely on structure and routine.

When comparing family travel insurance policies, check how the policy responds to events like natural disasters beyond your control. Understanding how a policy handles these situations can help you choose the right level of cover for your family.

For example, Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance may help with reasonable additional expenses, such as alternative transport or accommodation, if your trip is interrupted by a covered event like a natural disaster or severe weather. ^

Before you decide on the best family travel insurance for your trip, you should read the PDS to check what the policy will and won’t cover you for, any conditions and exclusions that might apply to you and whether the policy provides the cover that you’re looking for. Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.

 Compare Family Travel Insurance Benefits

Depending on the type of policy you choose, Fast Cover’s Family travel insurance provides access to a range of benefits designed to suit the way families travel. Each policy offers different levels of cover to help you prepare for and manage unexpected medical, travel, or financial events that can occur during your trip. Compare our policy options and benefits below to help you find the right family travel insurance that best fits your family’s needs and travel plans. ^

The table below is only a summary of benefits. Each level of cover is subject to full policy terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits, and exclusions as per our PDS available on our website. Benefit limits shown apply per person for both Singles and Duo policies. # These benefit limits are shared between Duo policy holders. ~ These benefit limits are shared between travellers under a Family policy. This means the benefit amount is for the whole family to be used together, not for each person separately. ^ Cover under these benefits are excluded while travelling within Australia. If you hold a Frequent Traveller Saver policy, the benefit limits apply to the combined total of all claims made by all covered travellers (including an accompanying spouse/partner and dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance.

What is Not Covered in our Family Travel Insurance?

It’s important to understand not only what our Family travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.

Here are some examples of when cover may not be available. Always check the PDS and TMD to understand the policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits before making your decision to buy.

If you become injured while breaking the law

If an insured family member listed on the Certificate of Insurance is injured while breaking the law overseas, your Family travel insurance policy is unlikely to cover the incident.

For example, this may include situations such as riding a motorcycle without the required licence or helmet, driving without the correct permit, or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while operating a vehicle.

Laws vary significantly between countries. What may be legal in Australia could be restricted or prohibited elsewhere. For example, in some destinations, riding a scooter without the correct international licence may result in fines or loss of insurance cover. Always check local laws before your trip, especially if your family plans to hire vehicles overseas.

If you are intoxicated or have taken illicit drugs or prohibited substances

Whilst it may not be illegal to have a drink overseas, alcohol consumption laws vary from country to country, and between regions within some countries. Make sure to research your travel destinations and follow the local laws.

Keep in mind that if you’ve drunk alcohol excessively, there are certain exclusions that may likely apply to your travel insurance policy. As an example, if you’re under the influence of alcohol and you stumble and hurt yourself, you may not have cover under your policy.

Certain drugs are illegal in some countries, and you may not be covered by your Family travel insurance policy when you’ve consumed drugs or been involved in drug related activities.

If your family takes part in activities not covered by your policy

If you or your dependant are injured in an accident while, for example, riding a motorcycle, and you didn’t add the Motorcycle Pack to your international travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.

It is important to think about what activities your family will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas.

Unsupervised belongings

When travelling with kids, it’s easy to get distracted, but if your luggage or valuables are left unattended and are stolen, you may not be able to claim for those items.

For example, if you leave a pram or bag on the beach while swimming and it gets stolen, or if you forget your phone in a café and it gets lostthese items may be considered “unattended” and not covered.

Make sure to keep your belongings secure and within sight or locked in a safe when not in use.

Regular medical or dental check-ups

Family travel insurance does not cover routine check-ups or prescription refills that can be arranged before you leave Australia. For example, if your child needs their regular asthma inhaler or allergy medication, make sure you bring enough for the entire trip.

Only unexpected or emergency medical treatment may be covered, depending on your policy. ^

Ignoring official warnings

Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.

Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.

Known events

Known events are serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your family holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas Family travel insurance policy.

If you buy your international Family travel insurance after an event is deemed a known event, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.

Disappointing holidays

Perhaps the weather on your family holiday was bad, the tourist attractions were too crowded, or your accommodation wasn’t as family friendly as you hoped. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your family trip has shaped up, your Family travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your holiday.

As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.

How Much Does Family Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of Family travel insurance depends on several factors, including where you’re travelling, how many dependants are travelling with you, how long you’ll be away, the age of the adults on the policy, existing medical conditions, and any additional extras you add on to your policy.

Here are some of the main factors that can influence the cost of your Family travel insurance policy:

Destination

Some destinations have higher medical costs than others. For example, the United States is one of the most expensive countries for healthcare, so policies covering travel there are generally more expensive than trips to closer destinations such as Bali, Fiji, or New Zealand. The region you choose will affect your premium, so always select the one that best matches your travel plans.

Number of dependants

Family travel insurance with Fast Cover allows you to include up to 10 eligible dependants travelling with you on the same itinerary. ^ The total number of dependants you include can influence the overall cost of your policy.

Trip length

The longer your family is away, the higher the chance that something unexpected may occur, like a medical emergency, travel delay, or lost luggage. Longer trips usually cost more to insure than short family getaways or weekend breaks within Australia.

Age

The age of the adults listed on the policy can impact the cost of Family travel insurance, as older travellers generally have a higher likelihood of needing medical treatment while overseas.

Existing medical conditions

If any family member has an existing medical condition, you may need to declare it during your quote application.

Some medical conditions may require an additional premium to be covered under your policy, depending on the condition and the level of cover chosen. ^

Optional extras added to your policy

Optional extras such as the Motorcycle Pack or Adventure Pack can be added to your Family travel insurance for an additional premium. ^ These allow you to tailor your policy to match your family’s activities and destinations, but they can also increase the overall cost of your cover.

FAQs about Family Travel Insurance

As per our PDS, a Dependant or Dependants means your children or grandchildren or children or grandchildren of whom you are the legal guardian, who are not in full time employment who are aged 20 and under and travelling together with you for 100% of the trip itinerary.

Essentially, Dependants are those who meet the relevant adult’s children or grandchildren who meet the abovementioned definition, in which they must travel with at least one of the adults listed on the Certificate of Insurance for 100% of the person travelling’s itinerary.

Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.

Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation, or needs. Please consider the PDS before making any decisions regarding the purchase of travel insurance.

A Family policy is a policy for:
  • you, your spouse (or someone legally recognised in Australia as your de facto partner) and your dependants; or
  • you, your spouse (or someone legally recognised in Australia as your de facto partner) and your grandchildren; or
  • you, your son or daughter and your grandchildren.

Note:

  • If you have a single parent family, or are travelling with your children or grandchildren and not your spouse (or someone legally recognised in Australia as your de facto partner), you can take out a Single policy and your children or grandchildren can be covered under your Single policy.
  • Family policies provide cover for a traveller and their spouse or partner or son and daughter who are travelling together for at least 75% of the trip itinerary, and dependant children travelling with at least one of the adults listed on the certificate of insurance for 100% of the person travelling’s itinerary. Dependant children may be the relevant adult’s children or grandchildren.

Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

If you are a single parent travelling with your own children who are under the age of 21 and not in full-time employment, you can take out a Single policy. Single policies allow travellers to add their children to their policy for an additional charge.

Your child must travel with you for 100% of your itinerary.

Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

A child who is undertaking a full-time apprenticeship is considered to be in full-time employment. Because of this, they cannot be covered as a dependant under a Family policy.

Family policies only allow dependant children or grandchildren to be included if they are:

  • Aged 20 and under, and
  • Not in full-time employment.

If your child is in a full-time apprenticeship, they would need to purchase their own Single policy to be covered.

A Family policy has a specific definition and does not extend to siblings travelling together with their children. Family policies can only cover:

  • You, your spouse (or someone legally recognised in Australia as your de facto partner) and your dependant children; or
  • You, your spouse/partner and your grandchildren; or
  • You, your son or daughter and your grandchildren.

To be included as a Dependant, children or grandchildren must be aged 20 and under  and not in full-time employment.

If you are travelling with a sister and her child, each traveller would need to purchase their own separate policy to ensure everyone is covered.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

For children to be covered under a Family policy, they must travel with at least one of the adults listed on the Certificate of Insurance for the entire trip. If children travel on their own to another city or destination without an insured adult, they will not be covered under the Family policy.

In this situation, a separate policy would need to be purchased for the children to ensure they have travel insurance for their journey.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

Foster children can be considered dependants on a Family policy if they are aged 20 and under, not in full-time employment, and travel with at least one of the adults listed on the Certificate of Insurance for 100% of the trip itinerary.

This allows foster children to be covered in the same way as your own children or grandchildren, provided the eligibility requirements are met.

If one parent listed on a Family policy submits a claim for cancellation costs only, the remaining travellers on the policy still have cover to continue their trip as planned.

If both parents make a claim for cancellation costs, the Family policy will end. For any future travel, a new policy would need to be purchased.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

Children listed on a Family policy remain covered while taking part in organised activities such as a Kid’s Club, as long as they are still travelling with at least one of the adults named on the Certificate of Insurance for the full trip itinerary.

Being apart from you during supervised activities like a Kid’s Club does not affect their eligibility as dependants under the policy. What matters is that they are included on the policy and meet the dependant definition, which requires them to be aged 20 and under, not in full-time employment, and travelling with a listed adult for 100% of the journey.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.

A Family policy only allows cover for you, your spouse or partner, and your own dependant children or grandchildren. To be considered dependants, children must be aged 20 and under, not in full-time employment, and travelling with at least one of the adults listed on the Certificate of Insurance for the full itinerary.

Friends of your children are not considered dependants under the definition of a Family policy. If they are travelling with you, they would need to take out their own separate policy to be covered.

If you wish for your family to be covered under one policy, you may be able to apply for cover. Fast Cover’s simple quote process can be completed online or over the phone to help you get a Family travel insurance policy. Below is some of the information which may be needed to get a quote for a Family policy:

  1. Enter your travel details: Enter all the destinations or regions you will be travelling to and add your travel dates.
  2. Select who needs cover: Select ‘Family’ and list the adult ages, and how many dependant children will be travelling with you.
  3. Cruising or snow sports: Tell us if you’re going on a Cruise or if you’ll be skiing or snowboarding on your trip.
  4. Choose your cover: Compare the benefits and cover levels available and select from a range of policy options shown for your travel destination.
  5. Add your extras: Customise your policy with a range of extras to suit the activities you plan to do on your family holiday.
  6. Add travellers details and complete a medical screening: Enter the details for each traveller and complete the medical screening for any existing medical conditions.

Make sure you consider the PDS for details on other terms, conditions, exclusions and limits that apply.
