Overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses

Medical Evacuation and repatriation expenses In case of serious sickness or injury, you may be covered for the flight home to Australia or to get to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Unexpected cancellation of your Bali trip

While it’s not ideal, you, your travelling companion or your close relative may become unexpectedly sick or injured in Australia before you leave for your Bali holiday and you’re no longer able to travel.

Bali is also noteworthy for its earthquakes and volcanic eruptions which can lead to unexpected travel delays and holiday cancellations. If you’ve already paid deposits for your holiday, like Bali hotels, flights, tours and activities, your Bali travel insurance policy can provide cover for these prepayments if you have to unexpectedly cancel your Bali holiday.

Luggage and personal belongings

Your Bali travel insurance policy may be able to provide cover if your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged.
If something has been stolen from you, make sure you report the theft and get a police report as soon as practicable, but preferably within 24 hours to submit with your claim.

Trip Disruption Expenses If your Bali holiday is disrupted because you, your travelling companion or a family member back home is sick or injured, a natural disaster occurs or your travel documents have been stolen and you can’t continue with your trip, you may be able to claim for your additional hotel and Bali transport expenses.
Sports and Leisure Activities We cover a list of sports and leisure activities like bungee jumping and riding a bicycle. For the thrill seekers, the Adventure Pack can be added to your policy to cover an extra list of adrenaline-pumping activities like scuba diving to 30m.
24 hour emergency assistance

If you experience an emergency in Bali you’ll be able to contact the 24 hour emergency assistance team to help guide you.

They can help to coordinate your transport to a medical facility, organise translation assistance, fly relatives from Australia to your location if you’re seriously injured, or even arrange to transport you home to Australia if it’s medically necessary.

Special Event Transport Expenses Are you going to Bali for a wedding? Or plan to be back in Australia for a conference? If your booked transport is delayed or cancelled, you can be reimbursed for the cost of another mode of transport to ensure you get to your special event on time.
Travel Delays Flights between Bali and Australia can be delayed for various reasons including severe weather or a natural disaster like a volcanic eruption or earthquake. This benefit provides cover for unavoidable expenses including extra accommodation, food and transport if your planned transport is delayed for more than 6 hours from the scheduled departure time.
Hospital cash allowance Your policy may be able to provide you with some extra cash if you’re hospitalised for more than 48 continuous hours. This payment is in addition to your medical and hospital cover and can provide for daily hospital expenses like phone calls home or TV hire to keep the boredom at bay.

Theft of cash When travelling to Bali, you should take particular care of your wallet as bag snatching is prevalent. If someone does steal your money from you, you should report the theft to the police as soon as practicable, but preferably within 24 hours, and you can be reimbursed up to $250.
Travel documents It can be frustrating having to replace a lost or stolen passport. However, with cover for your travel documents, including passports and credit and debit cards, you can claim for the extra cost involved in replacing it.

What am I not covered for with my travel insurance?

There are a number of situations where your Bali travel insurance policy may not provide you with cover, and include:

If you are breaking the law

If you become injured while breaking the law, you may not be covered for your hospital and medical expenses. This includes riding a motorcycle without the required helmet, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Remember that possession of drugs including marijuana, are illegal in Bali. Using drugs or selling them can land you with a long prison term or the death penalty.

If you are intoxicated or have taken illicit drugs

It’s not illegal to have a drink while in Bali, but if you’ve drunk alcohol excessively, your travel insurance will be void. That means if you’re under the influence of alcohol and you stumble and hurt yourself, you may not have cover for medical expenses. Drugs are illegal in Bali and you may not be covered by your Bali travel insurance policy when you’ve taken drugs.

If you do an activity that isn’t covered by your policy

If you’re injured in an accident while riding a moped and you didn’t add the Motorcycle Pack to your Bali travel insurance policy, you’ll be responsible for paying your medical and hospital expenses because it wouldn’t be covered by your policy. Ensure you have cover for the activities you plan to do in Bali.

Unsupervised belongings

If something of yours is stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to claim for the stolen item. For example: If you leave your bag with your wallet and passport inside it on the beach while you go for a swim, this will be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered. Make sure you keep your belongings with you at all times or keep them in a secure location.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s)

Medical expenses related to Sexually Transmitted Infections or diseases is excluded from cover for all of our travel insurance policies.

Regular medical or dental check-ups

Cover is not provided for regular check-ups or filling regular prescriptions as they are not considered medical emergencies. If you require regular medication, bring enough of what you’ll need for your Bali holiday before you leave Australia.

Ignoring official warnings

Should the Australian Government release a warning on Smartraveller that certain areas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, your Bali trip insurance policy may be void.

Known Events

Known events are serious situations, from natural disasters like the Bali volcano, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your Bali holiday plans and also the cover on your travel insurance policy for Bali.

If you buy your Bali insurance after an event is deemed a “Known event”, the cover on your policy may be affected. Do I need travel insurance for my trip to Bali?

Whether you’re staying in a resort or a hostel, lazing on the beach sipping cocktails, or doing adventurous activities like zip lining, there are various risks you may be exposed to when travelling to Bali.

Some of the common unexpected situations you may experience in Bali, and for which you can be covered for, include:
Unexpected illnesses

One of the most common illnesses in Bali is traveller's diarrhoea, which can arise if you eat contaminated food or drink tap water, and is otherwise known as the infamous 'Bali Belly'.

Bali Belly symptoms include nausea, stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration and other medical complications in serious cases.

In these types of situations, you may need to see a doctor for a consultation, go to hospital for treatment or purchase medication.

If you do get gastro after enjoying the many food offerings on the streets of Bali, and are unable to return home as planned, contact the Emergency Assistance team. You may be able to claim for the medical expenses and extra cost of your accommodation until you recover, and your policy may also be automatically extended until you return home.

Injuries

Travel insurance for Bali can provide assistance if you become injured.

You might fall over and end up with a fracture or broken bone, or become injured while riding a scooter in Bali, scuba diving, surfing or hiking.

As long as you were doing an activity that is covered by your Bali travel insurance policy, you can submit a claim for the medical expenses that you incurred.

Emergency medical repatriation

If you’re seriously injured or sick and the Emergency Assistance team believe that the standard of care in Bali isn’t up to an appropriate standard, they may arrange your transport home to Australia and for you to be accompanied by a registered nurse.

Your belongings being lost, stolen or damaged

It would be devastating to lose your GoPro, camera, credit card or phone while on your Bali holiday.

Bag-snatching has become a well-recognised form of theft in Bali. Someone may grab your bag as you’re walking or even snatch it from your shoulder as they drive past on a motorbike. These thieves tend to target tourists in and around the upmarket shopping areas and there’s also the possibility of having your belongings stolen from your accommodation.

In many cases, your Bali travel insurance policy may be able to provide cover if your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged. Just remember to obtain a police report as soon as practicable, but preferably within 24 hours of the theft to submit with your claim.
